Make Your Voice Heard:
Community Preservation Fund
Vote Yes on Prop 1 this November cpf
Please vote for the future of the East End! Join us in supporting conservation and clean water this November by voting YES to extend the Community Preservation Fund (CPF) -- Proposal 1

By voting YES this November not only will you ensure that our East End Towns have a funding stream for local conservation through 2050, but you will also enable each of the Towns -- East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton, and Southold -- the opportunity to invest up to 20% of their CPF funds toward water quality projects . . . projects approved by each Town based on its own water quality plan.

Please remember, turn over the ballot on November 8 --
Proposal 1 will be on the back of the ballot.

The CPF is an extraordinary tool for our East End Towns, allowing them to protect our important working farms, watersheds, wetlands, shorelines and historic resources.

Since 1998, funding through the CPF has protected over 10,000 acres on the East End -- and CPF funds have often been leveraged with private contributions raised by conservation organizations like the Peconic Land Trust.

geology hikers We urge you to let your Town know how important the CPF is to YOU, your family and friends.  Please join us in voting for the CPF on November 8 to protect the East End's natural resources, community character, and heritage.

Want to learn more? Contact Julie Zaykowski, Director of Administration, at 631.283.3195 ext. 32.

Help us spread the word: The Trust does not collect or distribute the CPF. We depend upon private contributions to do our work. The CPF is managed by our Towns to advance conservation and preservation of natural resources.

Nonetheless, we do work closely with all levels of government, local communities and partner organizations to conserve Long Island's working farms and natural lands.

Thank you for helping us spread the word about the importance of the CPF! Click here for a flyer you can download to share.

Jim and Jennifer Pike Purchase
Uncle Leo's Lane Farmland in Water Mill
Jim and Jennifer Pike with the Trust's Melanie Cirillo, John v.H. Halsey, and Kim Quarty
We are pleased to announce the sale of 13.9 acres of prime agricultural land in Water Mill, NY to Jim and Jennifer Pike of Pike Farms. This farmland is part of the Trust's acquisition of 33 acres of farmland from the estate of Charlotte Danilevsky in July 2014, a landmark conservation effort undertaken with the Town of Southampton.

The farmland was in two parcels - 19.2 acres along Head of Pond Road and 13.9 acres off of Uncle Leo's Lane. The Town purchased development rights from the Trust -- including, for the first time, enhanced restrictions that ensure that the land will

be actively farmed, primarily in food production.

The Head of Pond parcel was sold to farmer Hank Kraszewski, III, in January of 2015. The sale of the Uncle Leo's Lane parcel to the Pikes completes the intended goal of transferring this prime agricultural farmland into the hands of active, local farmers.

"The Pikes have been farming on the South Fork for many years, and are now more in control of their destiny through this purchase.  All of us at the Trust are proud to have been the catalyst for this new, critically-important tool that ensures that protected farmland is farmed.  This would not have been possible without the assistance of the local agricultural community and the Town as well as those who support the work of the Trust," said Trust President John v.H. Halsey.

AFImagine What You Love on Long Island . . .
and Imagine it Disappearing.

Join us to Protect the
Working Farms and Natural Lands
You Cherish!

Imagine what Long Island, especially the East End, would look like without the work of the Trust. There would be fewer farms, less local food and open space, more development, and even more traffic. Not a pretty sight!

Now imagine the places you cherish. So much that we know and love is still in the crosshairs of development. Because of people like you, we have the knowledge, experience, and track record to conserve more, but we need your help to accomplish it.

Your support is critical to our work. Please join us in conserving the:
  • working farms that produce so much including local, fresh vegetables and fruit
  • woodlands and wetlands that cleanse our water resources
  • shorelines and landscapes that inspire and restore us
  • historic landscapes, barns, and buildings that preserve our heritage
Thank you for all you do to protect
what we know and love on Long Island!

Ocean and Bayfront Preserves in Quogue
Offer Perfect Winter Walks

Everyone talks about the beauty of the changing leaves in the fall, but our beaches are equally inviting once the summer crowds have thinned. Now is a perfect time to take a walk on the beach -- for peaceful contemplation, for some vigorous exercise, or just to catch a glimpse of a surfer taking advantage of a wave break.

In Quogue, with the help of the Trust, the Village, Town and County conserved about 65 acres of wetlands and shorelines on both the ocean and bay sides of Dune Road. Included in this collection of preserves is a property now called The Snail House -- the Village's oceanfront beach access complete with a snack bar and lockers. In the off-season, from Labor Day to Memorial Day, you can park and take a walk on the beautiful ocean beach.

Across the street and just a bit further east up the road are the former Rich, Steinberg and Richman properties. These bayfront wetlands offer outstanding views of Shinnecock Bay and ample opportunities to spot both migrating monarch butterflies and song birds as well as many waterbirds that make the wetlands their year-round home. You can park in a small parking area near the fence and take a walk along the Village's boardwalk down to the bay. Don't forget your binoculars!

With our unusually warm autumn, this weekend would be a perfect time to get out and explore our coastlines!
