Conservation News:
Edwards property protected in Orient:
Over 20 acres of farmland, woodland and wetlands
|
 |
We have exciting news to share: At the end of August, the Peconic Land Trust purchased
20.9 acres of farmland, woodlands and wetlands in Orient from siblings Elbert and Harriet Edwards
. . . land that is now conserved forever!
The Trust partnered with the Town of Southold, which purchased the development rights for $700,000.
We are currently working with community members in Orient to raise $450,000 to cover the remaining acquisition, transaction and land restoration costs.
Please join your friends and neighbors with your support toward this purchase!
"I'm delighted to be helping the Trust raise money for a project that is preserving one of the last remaining unprotected farm properties along Main Road in Orient," said resident John Henry. "Not only can this preservation help to assure the continued agricultural use of the land, which represents an important part of Orient's cherished rural character, but potentially limited portions of the property could provide passive open space uses for the benefit of the entire community."
Generously, the Edwards family has agreed to a 3-year installment plan,
giving the Trust and the community time to raise the funds . . .
about 20% of which has already been committed.
Donations are needed. Please consider joining this important fundraising effort today.
Elbert and Harriet Edwards recently inherited the land from their mother, Marion Latham Edwards. The quaint bayside farm had been owned and farmed by successive generations of the Latham and Terry families in Orient since the early 1800s -- the cultivated farmland leased to Daniel Latham of Latham Farms, a lease that will continue under the Trust's ownership of the property. The Oysterponds Rod and Gun Club's use of the woodlands and wetlands will also continue as part of the Trust's Wildlife Management Program.
With cultivated prime farmland, wooded natural habitat and wetlands, scenic vistas, and access to Little Bay, the property provides the Trust with the opportunity to work with the Orient community on stewardship projects and educational programs.

Ag Capital Equipment Grant Program: We are taking applications!
New! Peconic Land Trust Receives funding from the Long Island Community Foundation in support of the Ag Capital Equipment Grant Program
|
 |
Do you, or a farmer you know, need access to funds for fencing, barns, irrigation or other capital expenses?
Help us spread the word! Applications for the Agricultural Capital Equipment Grant are being accepted from farmers in Nassau and Suffolk County for capital investments in farm operations -- including deer fencing, irrigation, greenhouses, composting equipment and more. The Ag Capital Equipment Grant is funded by the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council, through Empire State Development, and administered by the Peconic Land Trust.
Applications have been received, and we anticipate making the first awards later this year. But there is still time to apply! The program will accept applications through May 28, 2018, depending on funding availability. For more information, please contact Project Manager Luke McKay at 631.283.3195.
Visit our website for more details on eligible capital investments and application requirements.
And, we are very pleased to announce that the Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) has awarded the Peconic Land Trust a $25,000 grant to help offset administrative costs associated with the Ag Capital Equipment Grant Program.
Thank you to LICF for helping us help our farming community!
