Trust Announces New Ag Capital Funding Program for Emerging and Transitioning Farm Operations
New Program is Funded through a Grant from the

Farmers for the Future: $1 Million Ag Capital Program Supports Investments in Equipment and Infrastructure

Among the many challenges facing Long Island's farmers, the need for capital to start a farm operation, or transition to new practices, or adjust to regulatory changes is daunting. The Trust, with the support of a number of its agricultural partners, is very pleased to announce a new capital investment, cost-sharing program -- Farmers for the Future -- for beginning and established farmers.

The new program, funded through a grant from the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council/Empire State Development, will reimburse up to 20% of the cost of equipment or infrastructure investments, up to $25,000, to pre-qualified applicants. The program is open to new and emerging farmers, farmers upgrading equipment to come into compliance with new food safety regulations, as well as farmers transitioning to a new commodity, method of production or business plan.

The Peconic Land Trust will administer the program, with assistance from our partners including Long Island Farm Bureau, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning, Suffolk County Planning Commission, and Farm Credit East.

Conservation News:
Elizabeth and Brian Merrick Donate Historic Preservation Easement on Sleight House in Stony Brook
Preserving our longstanding community character is what Elizabeth and Brian Merrick have accomplished in Stony Brook with their donation of a Historic Preservation and Conservation Easement on the Sleight House along Christian Avenue.

Sleight House, already designated a Town Landmark in Brookhaven, was built around 1880 by Charles M. Sleight, a prominent wheelwright and carpentry business owner, whose wife, Adella Abigail Sleight, was a descendant of Brookhaven's first settlers. The family's archives are part of the collection of the Three Village Historical Society.

By adding an easement on the Sleight House -- a Folk Victorian home with Queen Anne embellishments --  and the surrounding 1.2 acre property, the Merricks have gone above and beyond local regulations and permanently protected the home and the surrounding property's historical, cultural, scenic, and aesthetic values.

"With the Merricks' foresight and the Peconic Land Trust's skill set to properly guide and execute this easement, not only does the historic nature of the Sleight House remain protected, a new precedent has been set in this very important historic corridor. The preservation of "context" has been achieved through this process and is, simply put, priceless," said John Cunniffe, Stony Brook architect and Brookhaven Historic District Advisory Committee member.  Mr. Cunniffe prepared the Historic Structure and Significance Report that is included in the easement documents and will serve as the baseline for the Trust's enforcement of the easement.

Thank you to Elizabeth and Brian Merrick for preserving an important part
of Stony Brook's history!  Read more . . .

Bridge Gardens 2015 Season
Thank You to Mahoney Farm and Summerhill Landscapes
for Donating Staff and Plantings to
Enhance the Entrance to Bridge Gardens!
We couldn't have done it without you!
Mahoney Farm and Summerhill Landscapes donated incredible time and materials for the upgrade to the Bridge Gardens entrance and the landscape along Mitchell Lane.

As many of your know, the Trust has been working with the Town of Southampton on a special exception variance to operate Bridge Gardens officially as a public garden within a residential neighborhood. As part of the application process, the Town requires the Trust to upgrade the entrance and landscaping along Mitchell Lane, which will also allow for better signage at the gardens entrance! (Coming Soon!)

Additional contributions are welcomed by those who love Bridge Gardens to cover the balance of the costs involved in this effort. For more information on how you can help, please contact Pam Greene at our Southampton office at 631.283.3195 or PGreene@PeconicLandTrust.org

Our thanks to Steve Mahoney of Mahoney Farm
and Declan Blackmore of Summerhill.
We couldn't be more thankful!
