Conservation News: Update
Just in Time to Celebrate This Holiday Season! Shelter Island Conservation Easement Generously Donated by Carron Sherry and Richard Hogan
We're celebrating a conservation easement gift made to the Trust on Shelter Island this month! Carron Sherry and her husband Richard Hogan have just concluded the donation of a conservation easement at their waterfront home, originally part of the Artemas Ward Estate and once the home of former NYS Governor Hugh Carey.
The family, tremendous supporters of conservation both here on Long Island and in upstate New York, committed to implementing ecologically sound management practices at their home and have permanently protected a 4.79-acre portion of their land. The easement area includes a formal Italian garden and a 100-foot buffer at the property's high water mark overlooking Shelter Island Sound. Not only does the easement provide protection to Shelter Island's surface and underground water resources, it also prohibits the use of non-organic pesticides, rodenticides, fertilizers and other non-organic applications on the land.

Mrs. Stephanie Pawlik is a very special teacher with a keen grasp on the importance of nature experiences for children. Recently, she brought two 5th grade classes to our Widow's Hole Preserve in Greenport where they met Denise Markut, the Trust's North Fork Stewardship Manager, and learned firsthand the many natural wonders to be found at this neighborhood preserve.
The students experienced the flora and fauna to be found throughout the site, worked on their nature sketchbooks, and wrote in their journals about what they saw, heard, smelled and touched. Many volunteered to return as volunteer land stewards and help us keep the preserve clean! Check out the video, created by one of the students inspired by the visit! The Widow's Hole Preserve was donated to the Trust by ExxonMobil Corporation in 2013. See our latest newsletter for more on the conservation story.
