Conservation News: Update

US Department of Agriculture Grant ForgeRiver
Funds Forge River Conservation

We have exciting news to share!  We've received a grant from the US Department of Agriculture for the acquisition of a 4+ acre nature preserve along the Forge River in Mastic Beach Village. The grant will reimburse our Revolving Fund for the purchase and help fund the removal of existing structures and the restoration of the land's natural vegetation.

Earlier this year, Trust Co-Chair Thomas B. Williams connected us with this important conservation opportunity -- the Trust, with the help of a conservation lender and using our Revolving Fund, acquired the riverfront property in September from the Stony Brook Foundation. Project Manager Kim Quarty and South Fork Stewardship Manager Matt Swain are now working with the USDA's Natural Resource Conservation Service on the restoration plan.

"The restoration will reduce pollution by one less septic system and improve the resiliency of the Forge River with the restored wetlands acting like natural sponges in storm surges," adds Kim Quarty.

Learn more or get involved in this important community project by emailing Kim at KQuarty@PeconicLandTrust.org or Matt at MSwain@PeconicLandTrust.org.

Join Us on a Sprint to the Finish for
Conservation Tax Incentivestax

The House-passed charitable giving package, which includes a permanent tax incentive for conservation easement donations, is very much in the Congressional conversations surrounding a year-end tax package. Peconic Land Trust and the Land Trust Alliance are pulling out all the stops to get it across the finish line and we need your help!

Recently, President John v.H. Halsey and Director of Administration Julie Zaykowski met with staff for Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand in their Long Island offices, and the conversations are already bearing fruit. Senator Schumer just signed-on as a co-sponsor of Senate Bill S. 526 and Senator Gillibrand has been a longtime supporter. Please thank both Senators and urge them to continue their efforts to make the incentive permanent:
  • Call both Senators: You can reach any office at 202.225.3121.
  • Thank them for supporting the Rural Heritage Conservation Extension Act,
    S. 526.
  • Ask them to speak with Senate Democratic Leadership about making the tax incentive for land conservation permanent this year.
You can learn more at www.lta.org/urgent.  Thank again for reaching out and please let us know what you hear back.
