Peconic Land Trust and Town of Southampton Complete Protection of 33 Acres of Farmland in Water Mill. Trust Issues Request for Proposals to Sell the Farmland at True Agricultural Value to Qualified Farmers.
On August 5, the Peconic Land Trust and the Town of Southampton hosted a joint press conference to announce the closing and protection of the Danilevsky properties in Water Mill, 33 acres of farmland for food production farming. On July 10, the Trust purchased the property from the estate of Charlotte Danilevsky and the Town of Southampton purchased enhanced development restrictions from the Trust at a simultaneous closing. The Town's easement includes additional limitations to ensure that the land is accessible to farmers who produce food in the future, the first municipality in New York State to do so. The Trust also announced at the press conference the issuance of a Request for Proposals from qualified farmers to purchase the restricted farmland. For more information on the RFP, please visit the Trust's website. Joining Peconic Land Trust's John v.H. Halsey and Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst at the press conference were Town Board members Bridget Fleming, Brad Bender and Stan Glinka, along with NY State Senator Ken LaValle, Assemblyman Fred Thiele, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Legislator Jay Schneiderman, Tim Davis of The Corcoran Group, farmers John L.
