Music this Friday!

This Friday, July 18, is the first of two music nights at Bridge Gardens this summer. One of our longtime friends, Charles Certain, will be here with a few of his friends to enjoy a  summer evening and play some fantastic music -- jazz, R&B,

and soul. If you haven't experienced an evening of music in the gardens, please make this Friday your first! And I'm looking forward to seeing some of the regulars from last season. Music nights are some of my most favorite times here at Bridge Gardens, I hope that  you will join me.

The gardens are also filling up and provide visual and aromatic treats for visitors, especially this time of year. A few plants to see blooming over the next month include: Acanthus spinosus, 'bear's breeches.'

One of my favorites, Lilium 'Ice Follies,' an Orienpet (trumpet/Oriental) hybrid, is a paragon of hybrid vigor, gets

bigger and better every year. This white and gold specimen

should be in bloom by the end of this week and will be at its peak for about three weeks.

Also look out for a variety of Leucoseptum japonicum, known as 'Golden Angel,' which is

planted with Athyrium 'Branford Beauty' and Lonicera pileata 'Moss Green,' a boxwood honeysuckle.
Golden Angel, boxwood honeysckle and Branford Beauty

The 'Golden Angel,' in the mint family blooms in October with spikes of creamy white flowers. It is great for woodland areas and is deer resistant.

'Branford Beauty' is a hybrid fern, a cross between Japanese painted fern and lady fern, and offers beautiful pewter green foliage. Boxwood honeysuckle is evergreen, but sadly not deer resistant, great for bright shade and grows 18 inches tall by 4 feet wide.  You can find the 'Golden Angel,' 'Branford Beauty,' and boxwood honeysuckle in the juniper bed just above the herb garden.

Other noteworthy plants include Amsonia hubrichtii (a bluestar with beautiful foliage) in the island bed and sideoats grama grass around the topiaries. And don't forget the Clematis' -- 'Betty Corning' (the easiest to grow) and 'Mrs. Robert Broyden,' which is growing up and  through an old bayberry. 'Mrs. Robert Broyden' should be in bloom soon.
