Welcome Summer!
Despite a cold spring here on the East End, the vegetable garden, first established at Bridge Gardens in 2011, started producing multiple cuttings of spinach and other greens in March and April; along with a continual supply of radishes, kales and cilantro. The vegetables harvested were used in our receptions during last winter/early spring's panel discussion with Long Island growers and producers, as well as donated to the Sag Harbor Food Pantry.
We recently completed the installation of Bridge Garden's third vegetable bed. It was tilled, amended with compost from Quail Hill Farm (a sister stewardship project of the Peconic Land Trust located in Amagansett) and fertilizers and raked into raised beds last week. This new bed will house our tomatoes, peppers and eggplants.
Elsewhere, flowering onion bulbs planted 3-4 years ago continue to grace the borders near the wisteria arbor and are in almost full bloom right now. There are several species and varieties, with a long season of bloom. Considering their durability, they are worth checking out over the next few weeks.
Also, take note! The screaming yellow plant in the herb garden's textile and dye bed is woad (Isatis tinctoria). The source of blue dye before the discovery of indigo, this member of the mustard family has fragrant flowers loved by bees, leathery blue-green foliage and a certain stateliness when it's gone to seed.

Just noticed that a Lily of China (Rohdea japonica) I planted 4 years ago is going to bloom. In a week or so, stalks of pale yellow will appear above the bold foliage of this native of Asian woodlands, followed in September by large, bright red fruits.
In a week or so, it will worth a visit just to see our Clematis montana Alba in bloom. It climbs 15-20' into a gnarly old oak and is covered top to bottom in silvery white flowers.
First waterlily of the season this week. Don't know what variety it is, but it's hardy, yellow flushed with pink and blooms all summer and into fall.
June and July are the months for roses! On June 21, I hope that you will join me for a walk and talk around the rose garden (along with a chilled glass of wine). here are a few images from last summer -- we are anticipating a great display this year even though the winter was tough on the roses and we had to cut them back this spring -- down to 6-12" tall -- they are now looking strong & vigorous. They've budded up nicely and a great display in June looks promising.
This year, we will have two music nights -- Friday, July 18 with Charles Certain and Friends and Friday, August 22 with Joe Hampton and the Kingpins. Both are perennial favorites at the Gardens. Bring family and friends and a picnic and enjoy an early evening with us. June is also the perfect time to join the garden -- members can visit the gardens all season long as well as receive free or reduced fees to many of our programs. For more information, call Thomas Hobson at 631.283.3195. We look forward to seeing you this summer . . . any questions, please feel free to email me at BridgeGardens@PeconicLandTrust.org.
