What's New at Bridge Gardens: August/September 2013
It's been a cool end of July and early August, although dry, which has had mixed results for the plants in the gardens -- but we've been doing a lot of watering. The vegetables in the new beds are coming in, and the perennial beds are filling in beautifully with summer flowers! Come by and see what's blooming and also remember to join us on Sunday, September 1 for Brunch: A Celebration of Bridge Gardens
-- our annual benefit in support of the gardens.
We have two more Fridays at Six Music nights planned: this Friday, August 16 with Charles Certain and Friends and August 30 with Joe Hampton and the Kingpins. Bring your picnic and your friends, we'll supply the music!
Note from Garden Manager Rick Bogusch What's Blooming:
Clematis 'Mrs. Robert Broydon: Unlike most Clematis we know, this one is non-vining. It forms a wide shrubby mound, 2-3 feet tall, covered with small, fragrant, pale blue flowers from August into September.
Phlox Robert Poore: This phlox is highly mildew resistant, growing 4-5 feet tall with deep pink, slightly fragrant flowers from July into September.
Senna or Cassia marilandica is native to eastern North America and grows 5-6 feet tall in one season and is now in bloom with its golden yellow, pea-like flowers in the garden's Textile & Dye bed. In addition to yielding a blue-ish black dye, it has long been valued for its medicinal qualities.
Also blooming in the gardens is Hosta Ginkgo Craig. A great edger, Ginkgo Craig has lance-shaped green leaves edged in white and dark lavender flowers in August & September. Its mound of leaves grows 8 inches tall by 20 inches wide. The flowers hover about 15 inches above the mound.
Lilium Formosanum is a majestic lily, often towering 6-7 feet above the gard en. It's very hardy, will even seed itself, and has 10 inch fragrant, white trumpet-shaped flowers.
We hope to see you walking the paths and lawns of Bridge Gardens -- and joining us for one or more of the programs we have planned for the season. And "like" us on Facebook -- we'll be posting more and more photos of the Gardens as the season progresses. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Introducing Scott McDermott
Bridge Gardens Intern
During your visit to the gardens, many of you may have already met Scott McDermott, who joined us at the end of J une. We asked Scott for a little info on him. Please stop by and say hi!
Tell us a little about your background and how you came to Bridge Gardens:
"I grew up in Riverside, Connecticut and came to the East End for one thing: to garden. My first year out here, I served as head gardener for a private residence in East Hampton. I left that to assume a bigger role as estate manager for a 40-acre property here in Bridgehampton, but once I realized how much of an office job it was (and how little gardening was really involved), I left to come work at Bridge Gardens. A lot of people think I'm crazy for turning down a six figure salary to garden, but I'm a lot happier digging in the dirt!"
"I studied horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden, as well as with NOFA's (Northeast Organic Farming Association) organic land care program, and I am NOFA accredited in organic land care. I have been interested in gardening ever since college, where I worked in the student run community vegetable garden on campus."
Most memorable day this summer: "My most memorable day here at the gardens was when a volunteer group came to help us from Goldman Sachs. It was incredible to see how appreciative these volunteers were to be able to be outside gardening, and doing something good for the community. I loved seeing their reactions to the gardens here."
Favorite Plant: "My favorite plant is the Lobelia cardinalis, the Cardinal Flower. It's a native wetland plant, and an important plant for hummingbirds and butterflies."
