Conservation News
Highland Terrace Farmland, Bridgehampton As has been reported in the local press, a 14-acre parcel of farmland owned by the South Fork Land Foundation (SFLF), a supporting organization of the Peconic Land Trust, is under consideration for the purchase of development rights by Southampton Town. The parcel, which is located in Bridgehampton, is fully developable and has been on the Town's Community Preservation Fund Priority List since 2011. The proceeds from the sale, which will permanently protect the 14 acres, will be used by the SFLF to acquire and protect additional farmland, similar to the Trust's Hopping acquisition. In that instance, the Trust resold the protected farmland to local farmers Jim and Jennifer Pike with additional restrictions to assure that the land will be farmed and available to future farmers at an affordable price. The Trust's President John v.H. Halsey, who also sits on the board of the SFLF, has written a Viewpoint in the April 25 issue of the Southampton Press discussing the project and its connection with the Trust's work in securing a future for working farms that produce food on the South Fork and beyond. We encourage you to learn more the challenges facing farmers, about this project and our Farms for the Future Initiative. If you have any questions and/or are willing to actively support the purchase of development rights on the SFLF property, please call us at 631.283.3195 or email to info@PeconicLandTrust.org. We will keep you informed with updates.
Cold Spring Harbor Conservation -- Community Celebration The Peconic Land Trust joined the North Shore Land Alliance, ExxonMobil, the Land Trust Alliance, Senator Carl Marcellino, Councilmen Mark Cuthbertson and Mark Mayoka, and NYS DEC, in Cold Spring Harbor this past Saturday for a community celebration of a conservation donation by Exxon Mobil of eight acres on Shore Road to the North Shore Land Alliance; as part of the donation, the Peconic Land Trust was gifted a conservation easement on the property. The Trust will work with North Shore Land Alliance on future restoration of the property as native grassland and shorebird habitat -- for more information on this project, visit the NSLA website. Last November, ExxonMobil also donated a 2-acre Shelter Island Sound parcel to the Peconic Land Trust in the Village of Greenport. The Town of Southold and the Village of Greenport hold the conservation easement on this property. The Trust is working with the Town, the Village and Cornell Cooperative Extension on the restoration of this natural habitat. Click here to read the press release on the Greenport donation. We applaud ExxonMobil for their willingness to consider land conservation options for these properties and we hope that these donations will spur more corporations to consider permanently protecting surplus properties as a way to sustain Long Island's natural heritage, including the health and ecology of our shorelines.
