Revving Up in Elizabeth City, N.C.
Second Annual Competition to award $8,500 in prizes
for winning start-up business that open downtown
The first time around was so successful, Elizabeth City economic developers will do it again. Beginning today, entrepreneurs may apply to win more than $8,500 in start-up incentives and a prime location for their business, by entering Jump-Start Downtown, an Elizabeth City business plan competition.
 
Sponsored by Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc. (EDCI), the Elizabeth City Area Committee of 100 and the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Economic Development Commission, the second-annual competition was announced at a business luncheon today by ECDI Director Wade Nichols. 
 
"We are excited to work with the next wave of entrepreneurs interested in opening a business in Elizabeth City's historic downtown," said Nichols. "This is a great environment, with good storefront locations, planning assistance, customers who support local businesses and neighbors who want to see them succeed. Jump-Start Downtown is a creative way to bring more innovative businesses to our community."
 
How to Apply
Applicants, who must be 18 years or older, may apply online at www.harborofopportunity.comThey have until Jan. 26, 2016 to submit their business plan, to include an executive summary, market analysis, marketing and financial plans and other documents. Any type of business is eligible to enter, so long as the proposed business location is within the boundaries of downtown Elizabeth City and occupies a street-level, street-facing storefront. If a business is located in Pasquotank County, the proposed downtown location must be an expansion. In addition, the winners must have their businesses up and running by Nov. 18, 2016.

"We're open to all ideas, from high-tech office services to independently-owned boutiques and restaurants," said Wayne Harris, director of the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Economic Development Commission. 
 
Judges with small business experience will rate the submissions, and two prizes will be awarded.
 
A first-place winner will receive $5,000 cash prize to use for start-up capital and $3,500 worth of additional services including:
  • A free advertising package in the Daily Advance newspaper 
  • Six months of free Internet service from InteliPort
  • A free one-year Chamber of Commerce membership
  • A free one-year Downtown Business & Professional Association membership
  • One set of business cards from MMT Printers.
 
A second-place winner will receive $2,500 worth of business services, including:
  • A free advertising package in the Daily Advance newspaper
  • Three months of free Internet service from InteliPort
  • A discounted one-year Chamber of Commerce membership
  • A free one-year Downtown Business & Professional Association membership
  • One free set of business cards from MMT Printers
 
Last year's Jump-Start winners included both a business relocation and a start-up. Dr. Travis Nestlerode, the first-place winner, moved Nestlerode Orthopedic Rehabilitation, LLC, from Charlotte to a 2,300 square-foot office suite at 405. E. Main Street. Leah Simpson and Joe Richardson opened The Photography Co, which came in second, two blocks away in a second-floor studio at the corner of East Main and Poindexter streets.
