Live Green in Plano Volunteer News
 JUNE 2013
Dear Live Green in Plano Volunteers,

Are you ready for summer? Here at Live Green in Plano...we are! The biggest topic for us is Water. Abby Owens, our Water Educator, has been working hard to spread the news about Stage 3 Watering Restrictions and how adjust to the guidelines. She has several classes focusing on landscape irrigation, which is the largest use of residential water.

Our other big program for the summer is the Early Childhood Series every Tuesday morning from 9-10am. Each week focuses on a different environmental topic and uses a variety of materials and activities to keep those active preschoolers engaged!

Sign up for both water and Early Childhood classes are on our registration page at livegreeninplano.obsres.com. Some of our fall programs are also open for registration if you are type who likes to plan ahead!

We also need volunteers for some of these programs. If you do not have a preschooler but miss them, come volunteer with us. This is the second year of this program and it has grown tremendously. Another super-successful class is the Nature Explore Family Club that meets every 1st Sunday of the month. Last time we had 50 people sign up! My girl scout troop and I volunteered for this a couple of months ago and we had a blast! This is a great opportunity for Scout Troops, School Groups, or families with older kids that would like to work together.

The heat doesn't stop us from our outdoor activities either. We've stillsunflower pcg got Garden Workdays on the 2nd (EEC) and 4th (PCG) Saturday mornings of each month. We're pretty full for the PCG workdays but we can always use help for the EEC..the shade is better there too! To keep that shade looking good, get those new plantings firm established AND abide by the watering restrictions...we need a Watering Brigade for the EEC as well. It only takes about an hour and you can come early to beat the heat!

However you join us this summer, we hope to see you around often!

~Charlotte

Plano has a farmers market! If you have never experienced the joy of produce, baked goods, honey, eggs, pastured beef or fresh fruit from our local providers, then you must make it to the Collin County farmers market. The market takes place on Saturday mornings between 8 am to 1 pm through October.

Home Gardening Series
Step 4: The Garden Bed
by Jan Eppard & Brenda Steib

Gardens beds come in all shapes and sizes: in-ground, raised, soil mounds, and containers. Each one has its own benefits and commitment levels.

In-ground beds are areas where the veggies are simply planted into the ground (like a farm). In most areas in the DFW area, you will need to amend the soil with organic materials. If you have a lot of land, this might be a good option. It is more conducive to planting rows of crops.

Book Review: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
by Gregg Shields

Could you totally feed your family out of your garden?  Well, if you supplement it with some locally raised meat and dairy products, could you mostly eat out of the garden for a whole calendar year? Barbara Kingsolver tried a few years ago when they moved their family of four from suburban Tucson to a small Appalachian family farm, and lived to tell about it in Animal, Vegetable, Miracle  (HarperCollins).

LGIP Advisory Board

Many of the members of our board have been spotlighted individually but I wanted to highlight the important contribution the whole board makes to our program.

What is the Advisory Board? Our board has been with us since 2007. It generally remains around 10 members although it ebbs and flows at times.  They meet once per month for about an hour and a half.
