Live Green in Plano Volunteer News
 FEBRUARY 2013
Dear Live Green in Plano Volunteers,

We have welcomed 2013 with a flurry of activities here at Live Green in Plano. Our biggest news is our new Water Educator, Abby Owens! She recently moved from Atlanta, Georgia, where she worked with local governments to implement regional water supply and conservation initiatives. She is already hard at work scheduling classes for the Learn 2 Live Green event in April and this summer.

Yes..I said it..it is almost time for Learn 2 Live Green! Our annual green event will be on Saturday, April 13 at the Shops of Legacy again. We have an exciting line-up of speakers, classes, and exhibits. New this year is our partnering with Nature Rocks North Texas. This group is a partnership of DFW groups whose mission is to connect kids with nature. There will be lots to do and lots of volunteer opportunities! Check out learn2livegreen.com for more information.Winter 2013 LGIP Class

Winter also brings a fresh group of LGIP Volunteer trainees. We have over 25 new faces joining us for this session. Would you like to meet some of them? How about some of your fellow long-time volunteers? Let's get together April 2nd for food, fun and sharing at the new bi-monthly LGIP Volunteer Social. Put it on your calendars now for 7-8pm and look for more details soon!

Step 2: Amending the Soil
by Jan Eppard & Brenda Steib

Soil organisms are essential for plant growth. They help convert organic matter and soil minerals into the vitamins, hormones, and nutrients that plants need to grow. A fundamental component of organic gardening is healthy soil. Amending your soil will keep your soil healthy and increase your yield.

The secret to effectively amending soil is to use enough coarse organic matter and the right mix of fertilizers. Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) are the 3 key elements in fertilizers. The N-P-K- rating identifies the nutritional value of fertilizers. Nitrogen promotes the growth of leaves and vegetation. Phosphorus promotes root growth. Potassium promotes flowering, and fruiting. I use the phrase "Shoots, Roots, and Fruits" to remember the purpose of each element. Organic fertilizers will have values less than 12. The ingredients listed should be items you recognize (e.g., alfalfa, fish, seaweed, corn meal, blood meal, bone meal, guano, or manure). Manures, with the exception of rabbit, must be composted before adding them to your garden.

Book Review: Plastic Free
How I Kicked the Plastic Habit and How You Can Too
by Caroline Zhu

Plastic Free  Plastic Free: How I Kicked the Plastic Habit and How You Can Too by Beth Terry was published in 2012 by Skyhorse Publishing in New York. It is a 343 page informative book filled with advice on how to conserve plastic in practically every aspect of life - from bottled water to lunch to dental care.

Terry humorously provides personal anecdotes, statistics, and personal solutions and tips on how to limit our use of plastic. She explains the drawbacks to plastic recycling as well as its environmental impact, and suggests several methods to recycle and reuse plastic bags, bottles, etc, and includes a list of nine companies accepting product take-backs, oftentimes with rewards. This book contains a variety of recommendations, including sections about inspiring "Plastic-Free Heroes", checklists, challenge worksheets, and even plastic-free recipes.

The Fast Road
to Green
  John Reas

Although John Reas has been a Live Green in Plano Volunteer for just over a year, he has already become a seasoned veteran. After taking the Winter 2012 LGIP Training class, he caught Green Fever! He first volunteered by writing for the LGIP blog and doing presentations.

He volunteered during the Learn 2 Live Green event and helped with the next round of LGIP training. His passion for going green was evident by the May Volunteer Recognition Picnic where he was named Rookie of the Year for 2012. In those few short months he had already donated more than 30 hours!
