July 2015

Martha's Day is July 8th!

"Writer William Arthur Ward said, "A well-developed sense of humor is the pole that adds balance to your steps as you walk the tightrope of life." Compass Center board chair Laura Morrison agrees. Comedy has always been therapeutic to Laura, so much so that she has spent the past eight years performing improv and stand up comedy with DSI Comedy in downtown Chapel Hill. "Laughing is a huge outlet for me," she said. "Comedy is healing, and laughing often has taught me how to meet all the challenges I face in life with grace and positivity."

On July 8th, Laura will host a community event at DSI Comedy, her third annual Martha's Day celebration. The event is named in memory of her mother, Martha Pearson, a victim of domestic violence. Laura hopes to shine a light on the support provided by Compass Center to victims of domestic violence in our community.

Admission to Martha's Day is $20, including a comedy performance by DSI staff and a catered reception. Special thanks to Molly Maid of Chapel Hill for sponsoring this year's event.

Teens Climb High End of Year Celebration

Last month, Teens Climb High (TCH) participants and their families gathered to celebrate the end of another successful year of the program! TCH is our youth empowerment program that provides medically accurate sexual health information and life skills training/development to middle school students in Chapel Hill/Carrboro.

During the celebration, five 8th grade participants were recognized for their role as peer leaders and congratulated for their completion of three years in the program. Peer leaders worked as a group to create the event's timeline, games for attendees and a presentation about their TCH experience.

We are very proud of our 2015 graduates and look forward to a great school year in the fall!
