We are on track to reach even more middle school students in the coming years! The Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiatives (TIPPI) of the NC Department of Health and Human Services has announced that they will continue funding Teens Climb High, one of our long-standing adolescent programs. We will be implementing Making Proud Choices, an evidence-based pregnancy and STD prevention program, reaching 200-300 Chapel Hill and Carrboro middle schoolers. The program will be delivered in health education classes for girls and boys as well as lunch groups for at-risk girls.
In addition to Teens Climb High, we are still working with Orange County Rape Crisis Center to offer Start Strong, our teen dating violence prevention program, to Chapel Hill/Carrboro school district middle schools and St. Thomas More School. This domestic violence primary prevention programming includes sessions about bullying, violence in the home and developing healthy relationships. We also offer one-time presentations and multi-session groups for middle and high school youth through M.A.G.I.C. (Media Analysis of Gender and Image Construction). M.A.G.I.C. gives students the knowledge and skills they need to analyze and evaluate media messages so that they can independently decide whether to accept or reject those messages.
We are excited about the new changes to Teens Climb High and continuing Start Strong and M.A.G.I.C.! Thank you to Chapel Hill/Carrboro City Schools for enabling us to reach students in the classroom.
Sincerely,
Ja'Nell Henry Director of Teens Climb High
