Proving once again that Sapsis Rigging does indeed get around....
On December 6 Sapsis Rigging had 4 inspectors on three continents conducting inspections for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. Chris Harris and Loren Schreiber were onboard the Quantum of the Seas just off Shanghai in the East China Sea. Eric Rouse was in the Caribbean with the Allure of the Seas and Steve Miller was just off Brisbane, Australia working on the Legend of the Seas.
Tête-à-Tête: Wire Rope Slings and Turnbuckles
Q: Is there an official color code that identifies the common lengths of wire rope slings? The slings in question would be those normally found on a touring concert or show.
A: There are no official standards in the USA that identify a color code for wire rope sling lengths. There are those that might argue this because there are predominate color codes that a significant number of people/companies do use. But those color codes are not consistent across the country. While there has been some discussion amongst some of the EU rigging companies about doing this, nothing has come of it so far, nor has anyone in North America suggested that there be an ANSI Standard or Code of Practice on the subject. My guess is that, given the individualistic nature of riggers, you won't be seeing anything anytime soon.
Q: I noticed your 1/4" imported turnbuckles have no rating on them for lifting or hanging. Most of the other turnbuckles I find on the web do have a WLL, with about 400 lbs being typical. I am using these with 1/8" cable with WLL of 285 and hanging items that are under 100lbs/cable. The items are fixed to battens and no one is under them when moving. Would your 03-06-88-1144 be ok to use in this situation?
A: It's always best if you can eliminate a turnbuckle from a suspended load condition. Turnbuckles are designed for tensioning two fixed objects. We prefer a trim chain or similar device whenever we attach something to a pipe batten.
That being said...We purposely do not load rate our imported turnbuckles. I feel that they're junk and not worthy of any load rating. We sell them only because people in the industry have consistently requested a cheap turnbuckle for non-critical applications. We recommend that you use load rated (domestic) turnbuckles when suspending loads over people.
