Tête-à-Tête: Painting Wire Rope
Q: I work for a company that installs speaker clusters. A common practice in this market is to paint the wire rope that is used to hang loudspeakers, solely for aesthetic reasons. I have heard different opinions on doing this. Is this practice unsafe or detrimental to the strength of the rigging, and if so why? A: It depends on what type of wire rope you are using to determine just how bad an idea it is.
Galvanized Aircraft Cable? If the galvanization process was done well then there shouldn't be a problem. If there is a bad spot in the galvanization process, then you will have a problem with rust and you won't see the problem until the wire rope fails.
IWRC and fiber core wire ropes that are oiled? The paint won't stick.
Dry fiber core ropes? Paint will stick, but the wire rope will rust.
I strongly recommend that instead of painting the wire rope they use a powder coated wire rope.
