Kings...bad news, kings...
and Luke uses the First Person Plural
Dear Bible Challengers,
Remember back in 1 Samuel, when the LORD and Samuel were asking the Israelites, "Are you sure, are you really really sure you want a king... they're really bad news...."? yeah. We're seeing it all unfold now, with the split into the Northern (Israel) and Southern (Judah) Kingdoms, and the kings who repeatedly break the Davidic Covenant... It's like reading that Judges Cycle, only with monarchs... and the monarchs are the downfall...
Very soon we'll read about the fall of the Northern Kingdom to Assyria, in 721 BCE (Before the Common Era) and then the fall of the Southern Kingdom to Babylon, in 587 BCE... And we'll finally get to that crisis in the history of the people of Israel that shaped the entire Old Testament: the destruction, then exile in Babylon, that gave birth to the Deuteronomistic Theology and writings...
Meanwhile, did you notice the other day when in Acts Luke slipped into the First Person Plural and referred to the story in terms of "we"? Fun. He's slipped back into telling the story through Paul's adventures, but I think that little sojourn into the more personal perspective is a little gem that makes me feel a teeny bit closer to Luke.
Thank you, as ever, for being on this journey.
