The Bible Challenge 2013

Jethro or Reuel? Horeb or Sinai? And MLK, Tutu, the Dalai Lama and becoming like little children

Dear Bible Challengers,

I'm struck by the synchronicity of beginning our reading of Exodus as we begin Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend. This story of liberation from oppression is foundational to the identity of the Jewish people, and it influenced Dr. King throughout his ministry.

You've probably noticed already one of the quirks that led scholars to develop the Documentary Hypothesis I mentioned in the last email-- Is Moses' father-in-law's name Jethro? or Reuel?  And is God's holy mountain Horeb, or Sinai? Exactly. Different sources had different names for the same people and places...

Today's reading from Matthew 18 reminded me of an article about a meeting of Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama... Article Here How I wish I had been a fly on that wall. These two holy men seem to embody Jesus' words:

"I assure you that if you don't turn your lives around and become like this little child, you will definitely not enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Those who humble themselves like this little child will be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.  5 Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me."

About a dozen of you have signed up for the discussion group. To subscribe, simply follow the link in the email you received earlier this week. I'll be posting this email to that group soon after it publishes, and then it will be your turn!

Enjoy!  And Thank you for being on this journey!
