Edutopia

Communication is the tool that is probably most important in education. It crosses all disciplines and is necessary for the successful transmission of ideas in all subjects. Being able to communicate on a small scale or globally are all options for our students today. In fact, students who know that a large audience will see their work are more concerned about excellence. In these last few weeks of school, there is a tendency to let down, but it may just be one of the best opportunities to give the students a great chance for communicating what they know. This "tuesdays" is to encourage you to finish strong with some great ideas and wisdom to keep them working until the end.

A creative website

I have no idea why I haven't written about Edutopia before, but it is with great pleasure that I want to highlight their amazing website. It is a plethora of strategies, plans, innovations and everything to encourage creativity and communication. The George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF) documents and disseminates the most exciting classrooms where innovation takes place. They are always searching for creative classroom ideas and teachers who love to share. The post that caught my eye last night was when Maura posted Six Engaging End-of-the-Year Projects from the Edutopia website and I knew it was time to investigate it more deeply. Please read the Mission and Vision section because the passion to create a public education system that it innovative and exciting is obviously paramount. George Lucas is the founder and chairman of Edutopia and we thank you Mr. Lucas for supporting and encouraging teachers everywhere.

An encouragement

I would like to encourage you to consider one or more of the projects mentioned in Rebecca Alber's Edutopia blog Six Engaging End-of-the-Year Projects.

A quick list of her ideas include:

  • Show What You Know
  • On-Campus Field Trips
  • Own a Planet, Song, Decade, Career, Author, Country, Scientist, Medical Breakthrough
  • Craft a New Ending
  • Create a Commerical
  • Portfolio Showcase

Any time we can get the students to reflect on their learning is valuable time in the classroom. Why not use these last few weeks to solidify all that was learned in a variety of styles and mediums? If you have a creative way to end the school year, please go to the Student Engagement blog section and leave a post. The Edutopia team is always looking for upgrades to share with other educators.

How do you do that?

How can you take in all that Edutopia's has to offer? Hit the highlights and you will be hooked. First begin with the Edutopia Blog Topics: administrators, assessment, brain-based learning, education trends, Five-Minute Film Festival, game-based learning, new teacher support, parent partnership, social and emotional learning, student engagement, teacher leadership and technology integration.

Next, browse by grade level and subject area for great resources, continue to their growing video library. There is also a section about schools that work and how they do it. You can also browse through their free classroom guides and download free pdfs. It would definitely be worth your time to create an account and get their newsletter so your toolbox with be filled to over-flowing. What great summer learning awaits you on Edutopia. Thank you, Mr. Lucas.
