New Vista for Learning

We are all in this business of teaching because we want to make a difference. I am in such a unique spot in my teaching career because am meeting many dedicated and creative teachers in diverse districts. I am learning more through being in the classrooms of other educators than all my years in my own classroom. We all share ideas, tweak them to meet the needs of their students and get excited to see the students so engaged. We live in a time that is unique to teaching because it is truly the first time that we have no idea what professions we are training our students to be successful in. This "tuesdays" is for creative teachers who are always looking for ways to upgrade the learning experience in their classroom.

A creative website

Someone who encapsulates the desire to make the classroom a place of engagement, excitement and curiosity is Rushton Hurley. He is the founder and executive director of Next Vista for Learning, which houses a free library of videos by and for teachers and students at NextVista.org. Rushton is a keynote speaker and demonstrates the power digital media as the element of surprise. He has a great blog where he treats us to the Five Things I've Learned.

Here are the highlights:

1. Predictability breeds boredom.

2. Comfort is a dangerous addiction.

3. I learn as I teach.

4. The more I know, the more I know I don't know.

5. There is strength in humility.

One of the best areas of his Next Vista website are his resources. He has organized FREE resources by categories and has written a short description as a helpful hint. Rushton Hurley is a teacher whose heart is for teachers.

An encouragement

I would like to encourage you to take the time to check out some of Rushton's videos he hosts on his website. He's been on TED Talks, a keynote speaker at many conferences such as FETC where did the opening keynote. I was very inspired by his ability to encourage and empower. His strengths are in visuals and letting images tell a story. He has over 1200 videos now available on his website for FREE - just because! Thank you Rushton for your heart for teachers and students.

How do you do that?

How do you continually learn from others? How do you find the time? Summer is coming. Make it a goal to follow one or two educational leaders for a new focus for the school year. I highly recommend Ruston Hurley to you because he's a true teacher, humble in his craft and driven by student engagement.  Iron sharpens iron so when you listen to, read or watch an educator who is an expert in our field, you can't help but hone your practice. According to Rushton there has never been a better time to be a teacher because through technologies we are able to connect with educators around the world. I wholeheartedly agree. Get connected this summer and share.
