From the President
| |
Greetings Members!!
Happy belated Fourth of July, I hope this message finds you well. Although it may be hard to believe we are half way through 2016! As contractors it is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day grind and forget what has been going on around us the past 6 months. For those of you who may not know there is a presidential election taking shape. Okay, I was being cynical, but in all seriousness there is a lot of political activity going on at both the local and national level, and we must take notice. Today is a vital time for NMUCA to represent our industry and the challenges and/or concerns we are faced with on a daily basis. If you or your company has any issues that need to be addressed at the legislature please let us know.
I would like to remind you about the many committees that NMUCA has to offer. A committee is a great opportunity to focus on what you are passionate about and make a difference in our industry. Some of these committees include Safety, Human Resources, Technology, Membership and Planning. Please let Jane know if you are interested and we will make sure to get you involved. Also, if you have an issue we can address in one of our committees, once again, contact Jane to discuss.
Today's economy is extremely tough, and our industry continues to face many challenges. Please get involved as we should all strive to make our organization the standard in our industry.
Darrin Howells, AUI Inc.
NMUCA President

OSHA Fines Increase
| |
OSHA penalties to be adjusted for inflation after August 1
Maximum penalties for OSHA violations are set to increase for the first time since 1990 as part of overall federal penalty adjustments mandated by Congress last year. The increases were announced by the Department of Labor, which issued two interim rules covering penalty adjustments for several DOL agencies, including OSHA, the Mine Safety and Health Administration and Wage and Hour Division.
OSHA's new penalty levels will take effect after Aug. 1, when the maximum penalty for serious violations will rise from $7,000 to $12,471. The maximum penalty for willful or repeated violations will increase from $70,000 to $124,709. Any citations issued by OSHA after Aug. 1 will be subject to the new penalties if the related violations occurred after November 2, 2015. OSHA will provide guidance to field staff on the implementation of the new penalties by August 1, 2016.

Paid Sick Leave
|
NMUCA joined together with other associations to form the Coalition for a Healthy Economy months ago to stop the proposed "Fair Work Week Act" introduced at the of Albuquerque City Council. After numerous meetings with councilors, letters and testimony during council meetings, the Albuquerque City Council voted against the proposal. Since then, the groups that were sponsoring the proposal at the City Council are gathering signatures to have a "Paid Sick Leave Ordinance" on the Ballot in November.
Many NMUCA members have a paid sick leave program in place or are not necessarily against having one, but this Paid Sick Leave Ordinance proposes significant mandates that will increase costs for taxpayers and businesses, and will stifle employment in the city. The proposal includes full-time, part-time, seasonal, and temporary workers.
