Greetings Members!!

Welcome July and monsoon season! Although rains and storms can create some challenges for the construction industry, moisture is always welcome in New Mexico! We are officially half way through the year and it's been a successful one for the association so far, but we're not done yet. There are two Membership Meetings coming up in August and October, our annual golf tournament, Last Ditch Open, in September - see details below - and our End of Year Social in December. This is also a great time for new members to join the association as the dues are half off the regular price. If you know a company that might be interested in membership, please call me or send me their information. You can also bring them to a membership meeting and we'll pay for their lunch and yours!

We're already preparing for the sixty day 2015 Legislative Session through interim meetings and committees on potential proposed legislation. No doubt, there's going to be some good and some bad bills as usual but you have a voice in Santa Fe and it has proven to be very effective! Over the years, the construction industry has created a very effective network at the Roundhouse, and although agreement on issues isn't always absolute or guaranteed, we work together frequently on legislation that brings funds, jobs, and opportunities to our industry. Input on legislative issues from members is always welcome.

Did you know that 2015 is the 35th Anniversary of NUCA of NM? We'll be celebrating and highlighting our history all year long starting in 2015. We'd love to hear from you about your story with NUCA of NM (or RGUCA.) Some pictures and stories will be coming out of the "vault" and hopefully will bring back memories for some and provide an interesting historical look back for others.

Legislative Update

Yes it's July and it seems a bit quiet in the legislative arena here in New Mexico, but there's a lot going on in preparation for the 2015 Session. There's also some issues that we're working on at the national level. Here is a brief list of what we're currently working on and involved with:

WRRDA signed into law affording billions for America's infrastructure.
Preserve the Highway Fund and secure adequate appropriations.
Opposing the proposed OSHA Silica Rule which would create unrealistic and burdensome regulations on construction companies
H.R. 4457, the America's Small Business Tax Relief Act of 2014 which included Section 179 Expensing allowing business to take immediate deduction of qualified investments up to $500K the year they were purchased rather than depreciating them over long periods of time.
Proposed changes to the NM Lien Law relating to public works contracts requiring additional notice to a contractor for certain claims against a payment bond for furnishing labor and materials.
NM Crane law and subsequent rules and regulations
"Wage Theft" bill that is being pushed by the NM AG's office for the 2015 NM Legislative Session after it did not pass through committees during the 2014 Session.
NM811-changes to the law regarding vacuum excavation
Public Private Partnerships (P3) advancing the use of P3s by educating lawmakers
Worker's Compensation drug and alcohol use issues.
