Greetings Members!!

American Flag

Hello Members!

October is Recruit a New Member Month! Since we're getting so close to the end of the year, any company that joins in October can pay dues for 2014 and get the rest of this year without any cost. If you know of a company that would be a good fit for our association and would benefit from membership, please let me know and I'll contact them.

The 2014 Board of Director's Ballot was mailed out and you should receive it within a day or so. Please take a minute to fill it out and return it to the NUCA of NM office. You can mail, fax, or scan & email back. The deadline to return it is November 15, 2013. If you're interested in serving on the Board or being on a Committee, please call me at the association office to discuss all of the available options.

NUCA Political Insiders, Will Brown

On September 19,  the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee  passed the Water Resources Reform Development Act (WRRDA). This legislation passed the committee by unanimous consent as both Republicans and Democrats in the committee emphasized the bipartisan nature in which this legislation was crafted. With an emphasis on jobs and economic development, both Chairman Shuster and Ranking Member Rahall touted the legislation as a 'job creation' bill. WRRDA will hit the floor in mid- October. This is one of NUCA's advocacy priorities.

 A Park Above

NUCA of NM has once again partnered with the City of Rio Rancho to assist in a community project. "A Park Above" will be a park for any person with any ability. This historical park will be the first of its kind in the state of New Mexico. This will be a free to the public "green" park that will have areas for persons with disabilities and challenges. A Ground Breaking Street Party is scheduled for October 12, 2013 from 11am - 4pm, all are invited. VIEW THE FLYER HEREAs a NUCA of NM member, I'd like to encourage your company to get involved in this community project. As the date of construction draws nearer, I will have lists of needs for the project.

Don't forget to register and attend the last regular membership meeting of the year on October 17, 2013 11:30am to 1:00pm at the Albuquerque Country Club. Tom Skibitski, Chief, DOE Oversight Bureau at State of New Mexico is the scheduled speaker/presenter. Federal Contractors Face Hiring Quotas for Veterans and Disabled Workers
The Department of Labor issued a pair of rules August 27 that will require most government contractors to adopt a benchmark based on the national percentage of veterans in the workforce (currently 8 percent), or their own benchmark based on the best available data. Labor officials say the new benchmarks are only goals and not specific hiring quotas. But companies must show documentation that they tried to meet the goal or risk having their federal contracts revoked. The rules may be challenged in court. We will keep you posted.  Read Labor Dept. News Release.

OSHA Issues New Proposed Rule For Silica Crystalline Exposure
OSHA has submitted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for Occupational Exposure to Respirable Crystalline Silica, which, if finalized as proposed, could add a significant financial burden on contractors. NUCA's V.P. of Safety George Kennedy is carefully analyzing the proposed rule and is asking contractors to read the major new provisions spelled out in the Fact Sheet of Proposed Rule Specific To Construction and email him what you think it will cost your company to comply with the new requirements listed in this summary. NUCA will be following the rulemaking very closely and keep you updated.
