Greetings Members!!

American Flag

Our last meeting of the year will be on December 6th for the End-of-Year social. I hope you will come out and join your fellow NUCA of NM members in this relaxed environment for one more meet before we greet the new year. Invitations will be in your mailbox soon.

There is another update below on the status of the Community  Workforce  Agreements from the City of Santa Fe. Please take a moment to contact the Santa Fe City Councilors regarding the implementation and use of CWAs. It's imperative that we move the ordinance through the Finance Committee so that it will move forward through the City Council. This ordinance will require a public hearing, so this is our best chance to stop the use of CWAs in Santa Fe.

2013 Membership Renewals will be mailed on December 3rd. Review the materials carefully so that you're aware of all of your membership benefits. Your prompt payment is appreciated. The renewal package will also include a year in review.

The Board of Directors will be holding its annual Planning Session on December 13, 2012. If you have any suggestions, ideas, or even grievances, please contact Jane Jernigan 505 888 0752 at the Association office so that she can bring your idea or issue to the Board.

Don't forget to scroll all the way down to the bottom and read the new OSHA Directive for Inspecting Roadway Construction Sites.

Community Workforce Agreement  (CWA)

Dear Member,

As you know from previous emails, newsletters and membership meetings, the city of Santa Fe is still keeping the Community Workforce Agreements (CWA) on the agenda and up for discussion in committees. Last week, there were two resolutions in the Public Works Committee: one was to delay the implementation of the CWA until a feasibility study was completed by UNM, and the second was to delay implementation of the CWA until a public hearing on repeal of the CWA was scheduled. Neither passed out of committee and both items were removed from the City of Santa Fe Council Meeting Agenda on Tuesday October 30th. Since these resolutions did not pass successfully out of one committee, they will not be considered by the council.

On Monday, November 5, 2012 (5pm), the Finance Committee will discuss "An ordinance repealing the Community Workforce Agreements Ordinance" This is our best opportunity to get this repeal to the city council at their next meeting. Councilor Bushee and Dimas introduced this ordinance and Bushee is confident that she has 4 of the 5 votes (on full council) needed to pass it, so there is still work to do. Please contact the members of the Finance Committee by clicking the email link or calling the numbers below. They need to hear from us!

Tell them:

  • how this will affect your decision to work in Santa Fe;
  • how your company may be at a disadvantage;
  • how you feel about being forced into signing a collective bargaining agreement;
  • how the requirement to hire 50% if your workforce from union halls will affect your current employees
  • how 5c per hour per employee paid to the union for administration costs will affect the cost of the project.

See the synopsis of the CWA further down in this email.

NEW OSHA DIRECTIVE

NEW OSHA DIRECTIVE FOR INSPECTING ROADWAY CONSTRUCTION SITES

OSHA has issued a
that details how compliance officers should check road construction projects while applying OSHA standards and following safety precautions that apply specifically to work "on or near" roads. Inspections will focus on construction work and temporary traffic controls, and will require inspectors to request a copy of the project's safety plan and the worksite's safety measures. The directive also requires each of OSHA's 10 regions to designate a staff member as the "traffic control coordinator" who will provide support to investigations of traffic control issues and ensure that compliance officers receive training on inspecting roadway worksites. Please share this notice with your field employees and read the  directive by clicking on the link or the OSHA logo above.
