How Shopping Locally is Selfish ... and Wise

Amazon is rapidly expanding its online empire, but behind the conveniences that the company offers are a lot of hidden costs. We have an info-graphic to see how shopping at Amazon compares with shopping at local businesses which has a positive impact on jobs, taxes, the local economy, and community. Before you click, here's why your choice matters:

Jobs: Amazon creates less than half as many jobs as local brick-and-mortar stores do. This means the more Amazon grows and crowds out other businesses, the fewer jobs available.

Taxes: In most communities, Amazon has no facilities and therefore pays no property taxes.  In about half the states, it does not collect state and local sales taxes. Property and sales taxes are the main source of funds for our schools and public services.  If local businesses are squeezed out by Amazon, households will have to shoulder a higher tax burden.

Local Economy:  While local retailers are engines of economic activity, spending their revenue at a wide variety of other businesses in the community, Amazon merely extracts money, leaving little behind.

Do You Prefer Animals Over People?
Bruce!

Sometimes I do, I must admit!
Year-end contributions to the Hayward Animal Shelter with "SantaCon Hayward" in the memo line will ensure that funds will go toward sponsored adoption fees, spay/neuter services and medical expenses to help make pets more adoptable. I'm a volunteer for the animal shelter and helped to organize the 4th SantaCon Hayward this year.

A wide range of ages attended this year's
SantaCon Hayward on December 5th to support the Hayward Animal Shelter!
Between 150-200
people dressed for the occasion showed up and rode the red wave through downtown Santa Stops, supported by generous local businesses. Funds raised support sponsored adoptions to qualified homes. We closed out last week with 21 cat and dog adoptions and more pets are in need of homes, many of whom have their adoption fees sponsored by SantaCon Hayward fundraising efforts.

Contributions can be made to the "Hayward Animal Shelter" and sent to:
