On this Valentine's Day, I'm reminded that an ultimate gesture of
love often means letting someone go whom we dearly adore. My experience with this came in December when we said good-bye to the shelter dog we adopted only a few months prior. "Rex" was found to have bone cancer and we were forced to make a decision about his dear life.
It was Rex who gave us the signal that he was ready to leave this world. All night before the morning we took him to the vet in Hayward to say good-bye, Rex repeatedly sat straight up in the middle of the night looking right at us, whimpering, as if to say, "Please help me."
I'm on the brink of tears as I write this. Those who've had a dear pet understand the pain and selflessness it requires to say good-bye to a dear friend who is suffering.
We visited the Hayward Animal Shelter several times as part of our healing process after losing Rex. We were hoping to adopt another big black dog like him because we knew those are the hardest dogs for whom to find homes due to their perceived
"scariness".
Unexpectedly, a little white and pink dog we named "Piglet" chose us!
Hayward is indeed the Heart of the Bay and most of the people here are loving and kind. Love happens when we least expect it.
May you enjoy the love and companionship of those dear to you.
Happy Valentine's Day and in my family's native language of Mandarin Chinese, "Gong Xi Fa Cai"!
