THE DACRI REPORT

June 2013
CELEBRATING 18 YEARS
anniversary 18 years ago today, I founded Dacri & Associates. It is really hard to believe how the time has passed since I started the firm in a small cubicle in a shared office suite.

During my 30 years in management--including the last 18 as the founder of the firm, I have seen radical changes in the workplace. The post recession business is leaner. Employers have greater expectations of their workers and demand increased accountability, while needing workers who are better trained, more versatile, and able to thrive and grow in an environment that is constantly changing.

The workforce has changed too. It is older, more diverse, tech savvy, and more demanding of flexibility, balance and freedom. Fortunately, there has been enormous growth in the sophistication of management and human resource techniques available to employers looking to get the most out of their talent.

With the emergence of a new workforce, employers must be more aware and prepared to deal with the changes they face. I will continue to provide all my clients the expert advice, ideas and tools they need to be successful.

It has been a great run and I look forward to continuing the journey with you. Finally, I want to thank each of you for the faith you have put in me and for the friendships we have formed. I am excited about the future.

Please let me know if there are things I can do to assist you. But for now, let's enjoy the moment.

7 DUMB THINGS
THAT WILL GET YOU SUED EVERY TIME

  ATTITUDE

Few employees wake up in the morning contemplating, "I think I'll sue my boss today." There is usually a trigger or series of events that sets an employee off.  Employees or former employees usually feel hurt or harmed and feel a need to lash out at their boss. Many take to social media and blast the company with disparaging comments, while others call an attorney. Nothing hurts the boss and company more than dragging them into court and going after their pocketbooks.

So what are the things that push employees to want to sue? Here are 6 likely causes:

  1. The boss loses his cool and calls an employee a name or simply says something dumb-usually in front of the employee's co-workers. Blasting an employee and embarrassing him never solves a problem and always makes things worse. If a performance problem exists, deal with it in a professional manner.
  2. Ignoring your policies. If you've got policies, follow them. If you don't want to, get rid of them. Comply with your discipline policies, grievance procedures, and investigative processes. Opposing attorneys will eat you up when you fail to follow your own rules.
  3. Being inconsistent. Applying policies and benefits differently is catnip for attorneys. Be consistent in your application.
  4. Lack of documentation. No documentation and it never occurred. Document immediately and do it right. And be accurate! Never make up the facts or give a false reason for your actions.
  5. Being dishonest. Everyone wants to be the good guy who says nice things.  Everyone knows there are times when fudging the truth can ease a potentially painful situation. But, giving a positive performance review to a poor performer is an invitation to trouble down the road. You're dealing with an adult-she can handle the truth.
  6. Not addressing problems. Hoping things will get better is foolish and frankly, hope is a lousy business strategy. If you've got a problem employee, or a performance issue, take care of it immediately. Waiting will only make it worse. It won't go away on its own.

Addressing performance issues professionally, honestly, immediately and consistently will likely keep you out court, save you a lot of money and grief, and will go a long way to turning a problem employee into a performing employee.
