Senior Trip Update
The Class of 2013, along with Head of Upper School Dr. Lue Bishop, are one week in to the Senior Trip to Poland and Israel. Dr. Bishop took the time to check in with the following update and a moving picture from Auschwitz:
"Possibly the most moving of all the experiences came as we approached Auschwitz II -Birkenau, the 'death camp.' Surrounded by what was once electrified barbed wire fences and tall watch towers, our students moved arm in arm, many with Israeli flags draped around them, through the large iron gate toward the railroad tracks that ultimately led so many to what were once the gas chambers.
The day was sunny and warm, seemingly odd weather for an otherwise dreadfully dreary place. Again, we walked in the steps of those who had once inhabited that place. We viewed pictures confiscated from those who were processed through the camp, and saw the belongings taken from those same people. The day was emotionally and physically exhausting, but at those times when we were hot and hungry and tired and our feet hurt from the miles of walking, we were reminded of the wonderful life we have, and remembered those who suffered so much. At the close of our visit we gathered for a brief memorial before making our way back along the railroad tracks toward the large iron gate."
