New Technolgy Course Offered for 2013-14

Emery/Weiner is proud to announce a new course offering. Beginning in Fall 2013, Upper School students will have the opportunity to enroll in Foundations in Computer Programming. Our teachers have embraced technology integration across much of their curricula, but we recognize that  the skill set afforded by a programming class is equally as important as fluency with contemporary software tools.

Foundations in Computer Programming will introduce students to Java, a popular programming language in both professional and academic settings. By building their own computer programs, students will explore object-oriented programming and hone their analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Additionally, drawing inspiration from Google's 80% work time, 20% 'innovation time' management model, students will spend day 0s learning technical skills which complement their Java work. This varied teaching approach will not only keep the course interesting, but it will give students a broad picture of software tools and their real-life applications.

While we are excited for this new course offering, we are perhaps even more excited that this class is our first step towards establishing a new academic department. In the coming years, we hope to introduce an AP Computer Science class in addition to courses which explore other diverse aspects of the discipline. Robotics is an area of increasing importance, and we recognize that a class focused on electrical engineering and robotics would be a valuable addition to our offerings focused on computer software.

Emery/Weiner is committed not simply to preparing students for college, but also to instilling the skills they will need to succeed in an increasingly wired world. With your continued support, we will continue making these goals a reality. Keep an eye out for more offerings to come!
