New Face in US Admin Office

Mary Lewis
Please join us in wishing the newest addition to the US Administrative Office, Mary Lewis, a warm welcome to EWS! Mary takes over for Emmie Rothenbach and comes to EWS with many years of experience as an executive assistant in a public school district. Mary is married - she will celebrate her 30th wedding anniversary with a trip to Ireland - and has two grown sons, and a daughter-in-law.

When she's not ushering US students on to class, Mary loves to cook, with a specialty in baking all kinds of pies. We all eagerly look forward to being her guinea pigs with any new pies while hearing Mary talk about the latest addition to her family, an Australian Shepherd Mix named Barley.

Mary is very excited to be here, and is touched at how welcoming the students, faculty and parents have made her feel in just a few short weeks. Please stop by and say hello!

Holocaust and Memory on Jan. 29

Please join us for a special presentation of "Through Their Own Eyes" at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29 in the Becker Theater. "Through Their Own Eyes" is an oral history film project that records the lessons of the Holocaust and its aftermath. 12th grade students gained firsthand knowledge by being paired with Holocaust survivors, whom they interviewed. From the videotaped footage of the interviews, the students have created a powerful documentary based on the survivors' wisdom on hate and forgiveness.

Jewish Federation 2013 Collage

On Tuesday, January 29, the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston welcomes Mayim Bialik -- perhaps better known as the 1990s sitcom teen queen "Blossom" -- to speak to women from across the community at its annual Collage luncheon. Women's Philanthropy makes up about 25 percent of the overall Jewish Federation Annual Campaign and a large portion of those funds come from Collage participation. Did you know that last year's Campaign raised $7.9 million to support hundreds of Jewish agencies in Houston, Israel and around the world, including The Emery/Weiner School, which received $202,500 in 2012.

Collage guests will enjoy shmooze time, a delicious kosher lunch and a rousing presentation by Bialik, a sharp and witty Jewish actress who has gone on to earn a PhD in Neuroscience, author a parenting book, and raise two children. Luncheon tickets are $55, plus a minimum suggested Campaign gift of $236. Visit houstonjewish.org to register, or contact Emily Dennis for more information at 713-729-7000, x 313.
