Dear Emery/Weiner Community,
It is a sincere pleasure to announce that our beloved Lue Bishop has agreed to remove the word "Interim" from her "Upper School Head" title -- meaning, she has assumed the position on a permanent basis.
By way of brief explanation, let me share the following: We were prepared to do a national search for Upper School Head -- in fact, I had received a list of several candidates from our placement service. But with Lue, we not only have a smart & experienced educator, we have an unusually effective & dynamic school leader -- one whom students, parents, teachers & staff both respect and adore. To get a sense of Lue's unique blend of substance and style, consider the email below, which she sent to high school faculty earlier today.
Incidentally -- but importantly -- the message below will also give you a sense of how Lue manages to handle Academic Dean responsibilities, even while serving as Upper School Head. She not only works very closely with Middle School Head Jennifer White (who's been a terrific addition to EWS), but Dr. Bishop presides over regular meetings of the Learning Support Team, as well as Department Chairs, in order to provide oversight to both these groups.
I conferred with several people before making this decision -- trustees, administrators, department chairs, and faculty -- but in the end, all I really had to do was watch Lue Bishop in action. Six years ago, she joined us after working for 30 years in public school education; she came to Emery/Weiner on a part-time basis, but over time has increased her hours, reach and impact. Lue says that she genuinely loves this place, which is why she's continued to give us so much of herself; well, I know I speak for the entire Emery/Weiner community when I say the feeling is quite mutual -- we're so appreciative of her straight-talking talent and heart-felt passion, all of which makes us better.
I wish you and your families a safe and relaxing winter break -- and a happy & healthy new year.
Shabbat Shalom.

Head of School

Dear Colleagues,
I know. I know. We haven't even cleared the runway on this semester and I am bringing up next semester. Forgive me, but I know that you'd like some idea of the format we'll be using for formal observations. Similar to the walk throughs, you will receive feedback in narrative form (please see the attached). If interested, check out this link as a way to differentiate instructional strategies from instructional activities: http://olc.spsd.sk.ca/DE/PD/instr/index.html. This might be helpful, particularly for those who have not had a formal observation using this format. I will be in your class for the entire class period, and will try to behave myself but sometimes I do get too excited about the class and just have to participate. There is no need to provide me anything prior to the observation, but please have an extra copy of any handouts the students use during the class period. After the observation, we will have a one-on-one conference to discuss the observation and the walk through feedback you have received to date.
In the meantime, thank you for a wonderful semester and for your support as I move into this role on a permanent basis. You and our amazing kids are the reasons for that decision--- pure and simple!
Have a safe and blissful holiday. Enjoy all this much deserved vacation has to offer.
With gratitude,
Lue Bishop, Ed.D.

and Academic Dean
