AIANYS Members Featured in Crain's NY Article Architects Seek Good Samaritan Status in Disasters

Having been effectively barred from helping out post-Sandy by liability fears, designers and engineers push for a law to allow them to pitch in next time sans fear of being sued.

On Nov. 2, three days after Surperstorm Sandy hit New York City, the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects dispatched an urgent email to members under the subject line: "Architects and Engineers Needed for Post-Hurricane Building Evaluations." Overnight, hundreds of architects stepped forward, all prepared to apply their expertise to the task of assessing storm-damaged properties.

Yet in the end, few of them ever went anywhere near the tens of thousands of battered structures and homes. Instead teams of over-worked and overwhelmed city inspectors were left to try to determine which properties could be saved and which must go, decisions that had to be made before rebuilding could begin. The reason was simple: Architects feared that they could be sued if a property owner disagreed with their assessment.

AIANYS to Use AIA National Funds to Assist Chapters Disaster Relief Efforts

AIANYS recently received funds from AIA National to be used to assist those Chapters affected by Superstorm Sandy.  These funds would normally have been added to National reserves and represent the commitment that AIA has to its members, components and their communities.

The AIANYS Board empowered the Executive Committee to assess the outreach effort of those Chapters who have expended funds in assisting the community and members in the Sandy recovery process and distribute the monies received.

In order to assist the committee in the assessment process, Chapters were asked to submit the following: Description of any Chapter expenses incurred as a direct result of Superstorm Sandy; description of any chapter expenses incurred as part of an outreach activity during the aftermath of Sandy; dollar amount expended and results of outreach.

The Executive Committee is making their final decisions and will be informing the chapters shortly.

Georgi Ann Bailey Receives CAE Designation Bailey

The American Society of Association Executives has announced that Georgi Ann Bailey has received the Certified Association Executive designation, the highest designation that a member of ASAE can receive. The CAE designation is an accredited certification program, which requires association and other nonprofit executives to demonstrate the requisite knowledge and skills necessary to achieve operational and leadership excellence in the association and nonprofit community. Less than 5% of association executives across the country hold the designation. To earn the CAE, candidates must submit proof of satisfying professional experience and achievements, educational requirements consisting of 100 hours in defined subject areas, and passing of a challenging four hour examination on the nine different domains found  in association management. The designation also requires stringent continuing education for renewal. Georgi Ann, along with the other class of 2013 Designees, will be recognized at the ASAE convention in Atlanta.
Georgi Ann has been with AIANYS for 10 years. In addition to her responsibilities as Director of Programs and Operations, starting in January she was appointed by the Board of Directors to act as the Executive Director. With the implementation segment of the Strategic Plan now in progress, her responsibilities extend across the membership, knowledge and government advocacy initiatives and portfolios. She remains the point of contact for AIA continuing education, administers both the design and honor awards program, staff liaison for convention seminar programming and keynote events, provides assistance to local chapter leadership and is the staff liaison to the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. She has twice been the recipient of AIA scholarships. This year she has been asked to serve as a member of an AIA CACE committee focused on professional development.
Prior to coming to AIANYS, she served as the Director of Programs and Conferences at the Professional Insurance Agents of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. There she headed up a team of 14 staff specialists in the yearly planning, marketing, administrative and fiscal management of over 400 seminars, two designation programs, three conventions and two regional meetings across the three states. While at PIA she developed a series of education programs for large firms called, Custom Class, the seminars provided firms with customized continuing education programs in their offices and is still being utilized by the organization today. She also implemented new registrant procedures that lead to enhanced member services to those participating in education programs. She is credited with developing and implementing a series of marketing plans that lead to increased enrollments in education and convention programs.
Prior to that, Georgi Ann was the Director of Education for the New York State Association of Realtors, a 65,000 member trade association representing the real estate industry. While at NYSAR she worked closely with the Department of State in the development of new regulations for industry based mandatory education requirements and was also the staff liaison to the Department of State in other matters related to continuing education and pre-licensing . Working in conjunction with local REALTOR staff and leadership, she developed extensive partnering opportunities that provided non-dues revenues to both the local and state levels of the organization.
Her achievements at NYSAR include heading up a collaborative consortium of the five largest real estate associations in the country to develop a facilitator's manual that insured quality delivery of the NAR Realtor Institute program across the country. She was also a presenter in the Instructor Training Institute, a program that teaches how to develop and present non-lecture based education programs and seminars.
Georgi Ann was the lead staff person in the development and production of an award winning, nationally recognized video based program on fair housing. She also chaired several association executive committees at the national level. While at NYSAR she developed and presented a series of leadership programs for volunteers resulting in heightened effectiveness of those serving as leaders at the state and local levels. The programs were presented regionally within New York and also at National Association of REALTOR conventions and midwinter meetings. She served as the staff liaison to the association's seven education committees.   During her time with NYSAR the
association's educational offerings grew from 25 Realtor Institute programs to over 132 statewide designation and single focus seminars, eight statewide regional education seminars that attracted 100 to 600 attendees and eight regional leadership programs that provided assistance to local officers and chairs in their program planning and governance initiatives.
In addition to the CAE designation, Georgi Ann is a graduate of the Association Leadership Academy and in 2010 was presented with an Honorary AIA New York State membership. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business, Management and Economics from the State University of New York. She is a member of the American Society of Association Executives and the Empire State Society of Association Executives.
