New York Regional Director Among Architects to Participate in AIA's Trade Mission to India

The AIA and International Trade Administration took a five-day Architecture Services Trade Mission to India earlier this month that introduced U.S. firms to India's rapidly expanding market for architectural services, helping U.S. companies in their pursuit of new Indian partners. Francis Pitts, FAIA, New York Regional Director, was one of the 30 architects who travelled to India.
The mission to India included representatives from leading small, medium and large-sized U.S. architectural services companies that provide state-of-the-art and world class designs. Targeted sectors holding high potential for U.S architectural firms include master planning, regional and neighborhood design, as well as architecture for ports, hospitals, health care facilities, airports and other transportation infrastructure, mixed-use projects, and architectural services.
India, one of the world's fastest growing economies, is seeking to invest $1 trillion in its infrastructure during the 12th Five-Year Plan (2012-2017) and is looking for private sector investment to fund half of this massive expansion. The rapid growth of the Indian economy, averaging 8 percent over the past 10 years, has created a pressing need for infrastructure development and the country requires significant outside expertise to meet its goals.

"This was an exciting opportunity to meet with Indian officials and prospective partners," said Francis Pitts, FAIA. "As one of the world's fastest growing economies, India holds many opportunities for architects and, for our firm, the chance to share the wealth of knowledge we have developed on the relationship between design and the treatment of mental illness."

The mission visited Chennai, Kolkata (Calcutta) and Bangalore, where participants received market briefings and participated in customized meetings with key Indian officials and prospective partners. Mission participants also had the option of making additional stops at Mumbai, Ahmedabad and New Delhi, where ITA's U.S. Commercial Service arranged meetings with both private sector developers and state and local government officials.

NCARB to Host Intern Think Tank

This December, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) will host its first Intern Think Tank in Washington, DC. The think tank will explore blue-sky ideas related to the future of internship, analyze the current program's real-world implementation and effectiveness, and inform IDP from the perspective of the intern community.

The Council is seeking interns to fill 12 spots. To be considered for the think tank, interns must meet the following qualifications:

* Unlicensed at the time of application

* At least six months of approved IDP experience (930 hours) and an active NCARB Record

* Available to travel and meet December 13-16, 2012

* Willingness and ability to participate in approximately 5 conference calls

* Willingness and ability to conduct up to 10 hours of research throughout the next year

* Have not held an officer or other leadership position with any architectural collateral organizations: NCARB, AIA, AIAS, Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ASCA), or the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)

Interns interested in serving on the think tank must fill out an application and write a brief essay on "why internship and licensure matter." They must also list a reference on the application who currently serves on an NCARB Member Board, as an AIA Component executive or officer, or is an architect. Interns will only need one reference.
