 Pat Campbell Jr. Championship

For the past fourteen years, participants from the Jr Tour have been selected to play in the Pat Campbell Team Match Play Championship.   This year, two ten-person teams were made up from our five age groups based on scoring average and event participation.  The Pat Campbell event, named for our original Jr Tour director, gives our players the chance to play golf on a team and in a match play format, both rarities in golf.

Congratulations to all of those players selected to play in this year's tournament; it was a great success with excellent golf, good competition and lots of fun and laughter.

The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits

The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits were created through a collaboration among The First Tee, ANNIKA Foundation and Florida Hospital for Children to promote healthy, active lifestyles for young people. The healthy habits are a list of nine health and wellness topics presented as a part The First Tee, formatted for easy understanding and learning by elementary-age students and chapter participants.

They are broken into three categories: Physical, Emotional and Social.  Within the Physical category, the three Healthy Habits that are highlighted are: Energy, Play and Safety.  All three are important for a child's growth and development year round, however during the summer months children tend to be more physically active.

When we take a closer look at the three Healthy Habits listed above (Energy, Play and Safety), we can see the importance of them throughout life, but also in golf.  Walking 18 holes can very stressful on the body, especially during heat; which is why it is so very important that we make sure our body has enough Energy to finish the round without being exhausted at the end.  Some ways in which we can prepare to have enough energy on the course are making sure we get enough sleep the night before, eat the proper foods before the round, eat proper foods during the round and after the round as well.  It is also a good idea for our older participants to work out on a weekly basis, this will them to maintain their energy while on the course.

The concept of Play comes across as somewhat out of the box,

however the importance of it is extremely high.  When children are simply playing with their friends and participating in different physical games and movements, they are developing hand-eye coordination, speed, rotation skills and other movements that cannot be taught.  All of the elements listed above are very important in building an overall athlete and golfer.  With the idea of Play, Safety also comes to mind.  It is important that children learn the meaning of safety at a young age.  Being safe in terms of preparing your body correctly for

golf and also being safe in day to day life are important.

All of The Nine Healthy Habits have a traditional meaning in which we all know and understand.  However it is the goal of The First Tee of Greater Sacramento to help our participants to understand the deeper meaning and why each of them are so important in golf, but more importantly in everyday life.

Our mission:

To impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf
