Potter's quick tip
Cutting multiple tiles
Q. I want to make a set of tiles that are identical in size and shape. Is there a simple but reliable way to cut all of them at the same time?
A. In this video from Ceramic Arts Daily, ceramic artist Angelica Pozo demonstrates her tile-cutting method using templates made from Masonite® board. Pozo also gives helpful advice on handling tiles so they don't warp and on preparing the backs of tiles for installation or hanging.

The cosmos in a Raku tea bowl
The Raku family has been hand building tea bowls in the same way since its founding in the 16th century by Tanaka Chōjirō. Chōjirō made tea bowls for tea ceremony master Sen no Rikyu, and his pieces are now esteemed cultural treasures.
Today Raku Kichizaemon XV carries on this tradition as the 15th generation of the Raku family to make tea bowls. The family aesthetic has been to produce tea bowls whose surfaces reflect the cosmos to their users.
As Kichizaemon XV himself explains, ". . . the interior of a piece of Raku ware shows us 'the cosmos in a tea bowl,' evoking everything from a black hole in the infinite vastness of space to the faint trickle of a tiny brook."
In this brief video, Kichizaemon XV creates a tea bowl just as his forebears did, beginning with a flat patty of clay, which he pinches and coaxes upward to form the wall of the cup. He then shapes the cup and foot by carving, creating a classic Raku tea bowl.
A longer video, " Cosmos in the Hand," shows the making of a Raku tea bowl from forming through firing, or, as the narrator puts it, "the birth of a micro-universe." This video also includes an extensive demonstration by Kichizaemon XV and discussion of Raku tea bowls with host, Kato Shuichi. During their talk, Kichizaemon XV makes an observation with which every ceramic artist will identify: "You have to commit yourself to chance."
