He's a star!
C Frost interviewed on Fox 2 Detroit

Centurium Frost on Fox TV

Here at the studio we've always been impressed with C (short for Centurium) Frost's star power, but now the whole metro area has had a chance to experience it. Last month C was interviewed by reporter Derek Kevra of Fox 2 News Detroit about the recent Fall Pottery Boutique hosted by the Henry Ford College Ceramics Club. C, who was surrounded by examples of his outstanding work, had the opportunity to talk about some of his pieces and explain how he makes them. C's work will be available at our holiday sale, where you can get a closer look at it.

Sculpting as performance
The art of Alexandra Engelfriet

Sculptor Alexandra Engelfriet really throws herself into her work, literally using her whole body as a tool to shape massive landscapes of clay. In this video you'll see Engelfriet use 20 tons of clay to sculpt the middle 10 meters of a 50 meter trench in Le Vent des Forêts sculpture park in France. Looks like squishy fun!

Tranche ? Alexandra Engelfriet, VdF 2013

What motivates Engelfriet's sculptures? Perhaps her description of her recent master class explains best:

"Awareness of clay both as a natural material, which is animated by all kinds of forces, and as the raw substance for the ceramic industry were at the heart of the processes one engaged in during the workshop. Direct physical involvement with a large amount of raw clay takes one out of an object directed way of thinking and invites one into an experiential approach of the material. Without preconceived ideas about the result the physical, performative aspect of working with clay was emphasized and new possibilities emerged."

You can see more videos of Engelfriet at work and more examples of her art, including her smaller sculptures, here.

And you thought you got dirty at the studio.

Make elephant ice cream bowls

If you're looking for a fun activity to entertain the youngsters over the holidays, how about making elephant ice cream bowls with them? Watch as Liz de Beer of Klaywerk Studio begins with a simple pinch pot that grows coil legs, a head, ears, a trunk, and a tail to become an elephant bowl. What a delightful way to eat ice cream!

Clay time with Liz: Project 2 - elephant ice cream bowl

De Beer's elephant bowls reflect the influence of Africa, where she grew up and learned the art of pottery. Africa also makes its presence felt in her other work, such as Modjadji - Spirit of a Rain Queen, a collection of pieces inspired by the hereditary queen of Balobedu people of South Africa. According to their beliefs, the Modjadji has the power to control clouds and rain.
