Hey, do I know you?
Who's who at the studio: Rose E. Gomez
Rose E. Gomez has been with Yourist Studio Gallery the longest of any of its Studio Resident Artists. She started working there when it was still Yourist Pottery, located on Packard Street.
Rose E. Gomez's explorations into clay began in 1998, when she wanted to incorporate clay in a project she had just started. "How could I make a mold of my face," Rose E. asked, "which I would turn into pottery I would call Potheads?" After phoning various studios in the area to ask if they could help her with her vision, Rose E. decided that Yourist Pottery was the best fit for her.
Rose E. had always wondered what went on in that white house on Packard Street across from the Blue Front party store. The sign in front said pottery, but she had no idea what that meant. It was all entirely new to her. Here is where her vision took a major turn, and she saw there was far more to pottery than what she originally wanted to use it for.
Rose E. says she has always been a creative person, exploring various media, but she has found ceramics to be the best outlet for her creativity. She finds inspiration from others who work in the studios and various guilds she belongs to. She also finds inspiration all around her, even from the streets--literally!
Plaque on a parking lot fence captured in clay by Rose E. Gomez, Yourist Studio Gallery Resident Artist
"They say if you want to get someone's attention, whisper. Well I say show up on the corner of Fourth and Huron in downtown Ann Arbor with a slab of clay, a bucket of water, and plaster to make a mold of a manhole cover. No need for whispering then, especially when the manhole cover lifted off with the mold, exposing the open sewer hole, and I nearly fell in!"
Rose E. finds that expressing herself in pottery doesn't come without its challenges. "Trying to create and develop a body of work while working full time and keeping my personal relationships healthy is quite the balancing act that I have not yet mastered." She is currently focused on hand built work with various textures. If space allows, she hopes to return to working with the larger pieces and develop a body of work for a series.
Rose E. considers herself extremely fortunate in finding pottery as her creative outlet and in the friendships she's made as a result. She says "I hope to never lose either of the two."

How the ancient Greeks made vases
Thanks to pottery, we know a lot about ancient Greece. The black figure, red figure, and older wares the Greeks left behind tell us volumes about their civilization and the way they lived. The Greeks took their pottery seriously. In fact, the J. Paul Getty Museum tells us that, in ancient Greece, the phrase " to make pottery" meant to work hard. To see how ancient Greeks made their vases, take a look at this video from the J. Paul Getty Museum. It shows the whole process from the multi-step job of preparing the clay to decorating and firing the vase. Wedging clay by foot looks like fun; maybe it's a practice we should revive.
If you know of any web sites or videos of interest to ceramic enthusiasts, be sure to share them with us.
