Keeping it clean
Picture this: you go out to the best restaurant in town expecting a fine meal. Instead a server seats you and asks for your order after merely brushing the remains of the last diners' meal to one side of the table. Major ick factor.
Of course diners do not want to sit down at a dirty table for a meal. Likewise, we studio users do not want to sit down to work at a dirty wheel, a dirty hand building table, or a dirty glazing table. The goal of studio cleanup is to keep hazardous clay and glaze dust to a minimum and to make the environment comfortable for everyone who uses the studio. Studio monitors work hard to keep the studio clean, but they depend on users to make their work areas as clean or even cleaner than they found them. As studio users, we are all responsible for keeping the studio safe and user friendly. Here's a reminder of the studio's cleanliness rules: - Use plenty of water when you clean to avoid stirring up clay or glaze dust.
- Avoid sanding green ware or bisque ware. But if you must sand, go outside. We recommend that you also wear a dust mask when sanding. Be sure to brush all clay dust off your ware before you come back inside the studio.
- Thoroughly wipe down any surface you've used with a damp sponge.
--If you are hand building, sponge off your area on the hand building table and do a quick mop up of the floor under your table. Also sponge off the slab roller and wedging table if you've used them. --If you are wheel building, wipe down the wedging table, wheel, wheel table, wall in front of the wheel, and spills on the floor. Clean wheel trays in the sink after pouring slip into the slip bucket and use glass cleaner to clean the mirror in front of your wheel. Mop the floor around your wheel and put any clay scraps from the floor in the garbage. --If you are glazing, sponge off the glazing table, any splashes on the wall, and any spills on the floor. - Clean any studio tools and equipment you have used: molds, ware boards, rolling pins, brushes, water containers, bats, glaze mixers, glaze tongs, and so on. Be sure to put tools and equipment back in their places after cleaning them.
- When you are done cleaning, completely rinse out all sponges you have used.
By following these rules, we can make sure we all have a safe and comfortable studio to work in.
