Call for entries: Dessert ware exhibition
Yourist Studio Gallery seeks entries (2 to 10 pieces) from local Michigan studio artists, students, and instructors for an exhibition of ceramic dessert service ware. The exhibit runs March 2 to April 8, 2012, at Yourist Studio Gallery.
For more information contact Kay Yourist at 734-662-4914 or kay@youristpottery.com. Please let Kay know of your intent to enter as soon as possible. Entries are due February 29 by 6 pm. Work will be juried for quality and professional presentation.
Suggested ware includes, but is not limited to, dessert plates, bowls, trays, cake stands, sundae dishes, banana split boats, espresso cups and saucers, and tea or coffee cups.
 | Apron by Darcy Bowden
| The exhibition officially opens with an artist reception and dessert tasting on Friday, March 9, 2012, from 6 to 9 pm. In addition to ceramic dessert ware, the exhibition will also feature a selection of whimsical vintage-style aprons by artist Darcy Bowden.
Haven't had enough dessert yet? Humans developed a sweet tooth early on, enjoying honey-covered fruit and nuts in ancient times. But desserts really came into their own in the middle ages, when sugar became available. For more on the history of dessert, read here.

Can you top this?
The Great Top Spin-Off is coming to Yourist Studio Gallery in June, 2012. Make a top of clay and enter the competition to see if you can keep your top spinning the longest.
The Spin-Off is open to everyone, regardless of age, and is free. Just design and make your own original clay top. If you need a little direction or inspiration, Yourist Studio Gallery will hold a special top-making workshop on Saturday, April 21, 2012.
If you plan to try for a Guinness world record in top spinning, you'll have your work cut out for you. Check out the Guinness Book of World Records for the reigning champions of top spinning. But you can still become the Yourist Studio Gallery top-spinning champ. Prizes will be awarded.

Meet the teacher: Inge Merlin
Thursdays during winter/spring sessions, another buzz of energy fills the studio. Inge Merlin teaches a basic wheel throwing class at that time from 12:30 to 2:30. Inge has been working in clay for 23 years, and fell in love with it after she had just graduated in fiber arts. Her interest grew from making solid, functional pots earlier to exploring hand building and tile work. Today she enjoys both, and focuses on either area depending on where her inspiration leads her. She says teaching opens up creativity as well, and she very much enjoys interacting with students.
