Big December Thanks

We want to say thank you to the people that hosted us during our time in the States. One month of visiting family, friends, and supporters was an incredibly encouraging adventure. We felt loved and prayed over. Thanks!

Remembering Milonia

It saddens us to share that Milonia, the daughter of Roseny, passed away in December, after a grueling fight with type 1 diabetes. We ask for prayers for her mother and sister and all who are missing her.
Picture Perfect

The ladies are back in full bead-making swing! They rolled some beautiful beads last month while we were away and wanted some individuals photos taken with their masterpieces.

Thank you to everyone that has sold or purchased their jewelry. You are making a difference in their lives. We ask everyone to pray for our beading program and the future moms we will be asking to join the team!

If you are interested in selling or purchasing jewelry, please send us a message!

The BIG 500!

We just hit 500 "likes" on Facebook. If we were less dependent on social media then this wouldn't be such a big deal. But Facebook is a brilliant way to stay connected. So it is!

A Heart for Billens
Billens with sister Ber-marra (5)
Having deep and meaningful relationships with the wonderful Haitian women in our lives is pure joy. That is until something devastating happens and we are moved and rocked by their hardships. For Louisemene her son's heart condition is a constant source of stress and keeps her praying on most days.

We would love for you to join her in praying for Billens, her sweet 8 year old son. He needs heart surgery. This requires that both he and his mother obtain passports and travel to the Dominican Republic. The next possible opportunity for him to be seen and treated is at the end of February. Please pray that he and his mom are able to get travel documents quickly!

A FEW PREDICTIONS
for the unpredictable

From the start we've made it our mission to listen for God's direction at each and every "what's next?" In the past that has meant pausing work when it felt like the right thing to do. One time, it meant getting back on a plane two days after returning to Haiti to raise a significant sum of money. It's been fun and sometimes inconvenient to listen to God's voice. I say inconvenient only because we aren't able to completely plan for what's to come. But His plans are always better anyway. So, while this is not a year-long projection, here's what most probably will go down in the next 3 weeks.

1. The recovery homes will be fitted with doors, windows, and flooring.

2. Construction of a depot on the back property is underway. It will store tools and supplies for the agriculture and farm projects and will have a security tower extension.

3. The clinic and staff apartment will also get windows doors, tile, and a set of stairs! (It's probably about time.)
We need your help!

The education building is a simple structure that will cost just under $5,000 to construct. It will be in this building that the women attend daily classes covering topics of health, nutrition, and life and business skills. Emilies and communities. The Education Center will double as a meeting place for support groups and business training courses. Extra seating will be added for community-wide seminars. This is the only remaining structure left to be built before Second Mile Haiti can open it's doors. This is the home stretch!
Education is game-changer, affecting not just one child but entire families and communities. Please consider partnering in the building of this center.

EVERYONE ELSE

The facility really is close to completion. In roughly two month's time we will "open our doors," which really means that certain moms and their really sick little ones can come inside and stay for a bit.

We've had to ask ourselves, what about everyone else? What about all the other people that will share with us stories of suffering, especially those that live and struggle just down the road? It would be terribly hard, and just generally terrible of us to sit inside our gates and ignore their hungry bellies, tired backs, and hurting hearts. The people living in the villages that surround our property do, and will from time to time, have real needs just like you and me.

So, if Second Mile Haiti isn't just about helping moms who come from afar with infants on the verge of death, what else will we do?

Reaching out, neighbor to neighbor, seems to be God's design for how we best take care of each other when the going gets tough. This month we wanted to introduce to you, as the family of people standing with Second Mile Ministries, one of the ways your gifts will keep on giving.

There's a woman I know; I've blogged about her in the past at a time when she faced an impossible number of obstacles. Her mud and stick home was literally crumbling on top of her family of 7. Her husband was ill and couldn't work. Her kids were getting sick with alarming frequency. I made it my personal mission to help this family to the extent that I could but as much as I wished for this family to have a solid roof over their heads I knew that that, that housebuilding, was not my place. I remember the day she told me that her church had come by with 5 bags of cement to provide them with that roof. My faith in the church and in community sky-rocketed on that day.

Church is such a huge component in the landscape of village life.
We were giving this same women a ride home one day when she pointed to a tattered church where her kids were spending the day. Sure enough this weathered church, that had neither walls or a roof was overflowing with children. She said she was sorry we wouldn't have the chance to see her kids, but we weren't sorry to hear the reason why. "Its an apostolic church," she said. "They like to dance there." Dancing and singing and getting filled with Jesus on their day off of school. I really couldn't think of anything better. We know that her family actually attends the Baptist church only another 50 meters down the road. And Pastor Mark, the pastor that decided to help us with construction one day, just because, leads a church 50 meters down the road in the other direction.

We've witnessed these churches, faithfully and persistently reach out to the people in these villages, both those who come inside and those who don't. Each month, we will give from our gifts to a church or community group within the vicinity of the Second Mile Haiti compound. We couldn't think of a better way to sow back into these communities than to stand beside these trusted community leaders. One month, the funds might be used to repair the first church in the story or to fund a teenage worship band that Pastor Mark has dreamed of for his youth. Or it might be used by the outreach team at church #2 to bring 5 bags of cement to another family that faces an impossible set of obstacles. Bondye konnen.

We can't wait to see God move and bless through Second Mile's tithes. Stayed tuned, as we will share these stories each month.
"Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way, so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God."
