Second Mile Ministries Newsletter October 2012
2 Timothy 1:7
"But God did not give us a spirit of fearfulness; but of power, and of love, and of wise discretion."
Also in October...

We hired a third member of the bead making team. Meet Roseny!

She is the mother of two beautiful girls. In past newsletters we've asked for prayer for her eldest daughter Milonia, an 18 year old living with Type 1 Diabetes.

90% of children diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes don't survive into adulthood simply because their families can't meet the financial demands of this illness.

God has written a different story for this family. Milonia's life is a miracle and testament to God's grace and her mom's wisdom and patience.

Roseny is now an empowered woman. The monthly salary she receives as a bead-maker will help her feed and care for her family. Thanks for making it possible for this fantastic mother to earn a dignified income.

Many of you have offered additional help by sending diabetes supplies and purchasing insulin. Thank you.

You can continue to show support for this family by purchasing her hand-made jewelry.

You're invited to this year's big event!
Tucson, AZWe're having a Silent Auction/Meet and Greet with photos, stories, a taste of Haiti, Amy and Jenn, and so much more. We want you to be there! We know this will be a fun way for friends and supporters to meet each other, catch the vision, and join forces in the last big fundraising push of the year.

We hope to begin serving families at Second Mile Haiti in 2013. We need your help!

December 8th. Save the date. More details to come!
Jan 2012- Last minute shopping before our return flight to Haiti 3 months later. Not sure of what God had in store, we bought oatmeal and air mattresses.
One Year Later

October is a special month for Jenn and I. It is the month God called us into something new, something great. It is the month where he told us to pick up our stuff, leave where we were, and follow after Him.

In October 2011 we left our roles as long term staff at another organization in Haiti and took the first steps of a fresh new journey.

Here we are a year later at the brink of something exceptional. And here you are bearing witness to a God of miracles and building a foundation with your prayers and participation. We LOVE being on this faith journey with you!

So we celebrate: one year of prayers answered, faithful leading, and overwhelming joy.
Progress at "the Land"
The recovery homes have a roof! It is such a relief to know that this phase of construction is complete. Thank you to all who made this possible!

There's still more to be done.

God blessed us with such an amazing location. If you've seen "the land" I'm sure you agree. It's awesome.

To use this great space to it's maximum potential both the clinic and the recovery homes with have a second story.  Long term staff will be housed above the clinic. Above the recovery homes we will create offices for Haitian employees, workshops, sleeping quarters for Haitian medical staff,  a team meeting space and more. Only $6,000 is needed to finish ALL current construction projects. What a mighty God we serve!
Coming soon...

Jason (right) and Mark, a friend who purchased tools for the trip.
Next month our friend Jason Gigure from Mt. Zion Lutheran Church will be returning to Haiti. Together with Jenn, he will design and help construct bath houses, composting
toilets, and an area for washing.

He did great work with the Haitian team when he was here in September. They completed a septic system and drainage field, and installed a reservoir, toilet, and sink in just 7 days! In Home Depotless Haiti that, friends, is impressive. We can't wait to have him back.

The church body at Mt. Zion is working hard to fundraise for the cost of these projects.  Donations can be given to Jason (at church) or made online here
Healthcare Update

Last week two talented nurses came to Haiti to bless Second Mile. They brought with them 4 trunks overflowing with medical supplies. Items were donated and compiled by friends, family, and coworkers. These 4 trunks, in addition to the 7 giant suitcases that arrived this summer, could only mean one thing...time to get organized. Alexis and Rebecca sorted and inventoried the supplies and placed them in bins that were also donated by friends of SMM in response to a FB post.

This little project represents the efforts and generosity of so many. What's inside the boxes?, you ask. Items like nasogastric feeding tubes will provide life saving nutrition for infants that are too weak to eat by mouth. Sutures, gauze, and medical tape will allow us to serve the community after unfortunate accidents. Soap will help combat skin infections. Syringes will help us deliver medication to treat worms, anemia, and malaria. Blood sugar testing supplies let us continue to reach out to people living with diabetes. It's all so, so good. Thank you.
