'Barefoot Ecologists' are community managers with basic training in data collection and analysis. They work with other community members to design and implement management regulations.

 


 
 

WHRC scientists recently traveled to Ecuador to conduct fieldwork - this time, not to collect data, but to teach indigenous peoples techniques in mapping and monitoring their forests.

WHRC named Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland as the recipient of the Lawrence S. Huntington Environmental Prize. The prize recognizes leaders who advance research and communication on climate, earth sciences, and conservation.

WHRC held workshops for a number of pantropical scholars from 2009-2011. The scholars expanded their skills in forest measurement and monitoring techniques to advance knowledge-transfer in their home regions. Browse their newsletter.

Guest Blog: Chico Mendes Forest Citizenry Prize  
 
On December 15, 2012, Tião Viana, the governor of the State of Acre, Brazil, awarded the National/International Chico Mendes Forest Citizenry Prize to Dr. Irving Foster Brown, a Senior Scientist at the Woods Hole Research Center. The award ceremony was held at the Rio Branco (Acre, Brazil) Palace, on the birthday of the late Chico Mendes, the famed rubber tapper movement leader.
