Cardinal Chronicles Highlights

It's hard to believe that the first quarter of 2015 is almost over. The second quarter will bring historic change to Cardinal. We will move our headquarters from Anaheim to Santa Ana, where Cardinal had its beginning. While our office location will change, our dedication and commitment to our clients and business partners will never change. Our new address will be 825 North Park Center Drive, Santa Ana, 92705.

See the article about our move in this edition. We will keep everyone apprised of the plan and progress as we get closer to our spring move date.

As we climb out of our comparatively mild winter and set our sights on the coming spring, we remind all our client Associations to ask your pool service company about the expiration dates on all your pool and spa drain covers. Many cover warrantees are expiring now, and you need those life-saving covers to be operating at peak performance. It's not only a safety measure, it's the law.

While you're checking on your pool and spa drain covers, our fine feathered friends are mapping out their spring routes back to our warm climate and straight to your pools, ponds, and lakes. The Health Department reminds us of the risks involved with encouraging ducks to make their homes in your association. Simply stated, don't do it.

I'm proud to announce that Cardinal was awarded honors at Orange County Regional Chapter of Community Associations Institute (CAI-OCRC) annual awards dinner. Our company was named "Corporate Sponsor of the Year," and Cardinal Account Manager Maryanne Hurley-Ciccioni received "Recruiter of the Year." As Immediate Past President of the organization, I bestowed the prestigious President's award upon former Cardinal President Annette U'Ren (posthumously) and CEO and Founder Susan Naples.

I hope you'll enjoy the details of these articles and much more in our first edition of 2015!

And the Award Goes To...

Cardinal Property Management congratulates all nominees and winners of the Orange County Regional Chapter of Community Associations Institute (CAI-OCRC) annual awards. It's a PCAM for Maryanne!

Please join us in congratulating Maryanne Hurley-Ciccioni for earning the prestigious Professional Community Association Manager (PCAM) designation from Community Associations Institute. This certification is considered the pinnacle of community association management credentials. It is the highest professional recognition nationwide to managers who specialize in community association management. Managers with the PCAM designation are experienced managers who demonstrate advanced skills and knowledge, and are recognized as among the best in the nation.

Qualifications of attaining PCAM status include at least five years of direct community association management experience, successful completion of all six M-200 level programs, and passing a rigorous examination. "I am proud to have accomplished my goal of reaching this level of education so that I can serve my clients from the most knowledgeable perspective I can attain," said Maryanne.

Congratulations, Maryanne!

Mike Ramm, Teri Brown, and Vanessa Cruz Earn CMCA Credential

Congratulations to Account Managers Mike Ramm, Teri Brown, and Vanessa Cruz for earning their Certified Manager of Community Associations (CMCA) credential from the Community Association Managers International Certification Board. The CMCA designation is earned after completing a three-day course and passing a quiz, and then successfully completing a comprehensive examination.

Mike came to Cardinal in March 2014 as an Account Manager. He also has aspirations of earning his PCAM credential. "The reason I want to continue to expand my knowledge in my industry is to help the Board Members create and maintain successful and harmonious Associations."

Teri joined Cardinal in 2010 as an administrative assistant. She then became Assistant to the President. In 2012, Teri became the on-site Administrative Assistant in the community in which she has risen through the ranks to General Manager.

Vanessa has been a member of the Cardinal Team since 2010, serving in a variety of positions of increasing responsibility.

Spotlight on Our Staff at La Mirada Landmark Adult Community Association

Continuing our series of introducing our various departments to our readers, this edition puts the spotlight on our five Cardinal team members who work onsite at La Mirada Landmark Adult Community Association.

La Mirada Landmark is an age 55+ community consisting of 521 condominiums on 100 acres. Cardinal General Manager Teri Brown guides the team as they provide daily service to the homeowner's and Board of Directors. Administrative Assistant Marilyn Coover inputs work orders, registers all new residents, and provides orientations as a few of her daily duties. Activities Coordinator Barbara Bennett collects funds, plans entertainment and trips, and is the editor of the association's monthly newsletter. Steve Lucero is a general contractor, and he and Eddie Raheb perform inspections and maintain the buildings. They perform small repairs such as gates, shingles, garage springs and wood repairs. After inspecting the areas of concern to homeowners, they create recommendations for the homeowners and Associations.

Relatively new to Cardinal's client list, La Mirada Landmark Adult Community Association has quickly adopted our team as "family."

Cardinal Champions for a Cause

Cardinal's Champion for a Cause (CCC) is a program internal to Cardinal that allows employees and the company to team up to donate money to the employees' favorite charitable organizations throughout the year. Employees who participate in Casual Friday dress day each week donate a small sum of money to do so. Cardinal matches the collected funs, and a participating employee's name is randomly chosen during a staff meeting. That employee selects the charity to receive the donation.

Victoria Helwich (Accounting) was selected as Cardinal's Champion for a Cause during a recent staff meeting. Victoria has chosen the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of St. Jude Medical Center to receive her funds. "I chose NICU because my son Mason spent the first three days of his life there, and he received great care," said Victoria. Mason is now a happy, healthy two-year old.

Past CCC winners have donated to the Dandy-Walker Alliance, National Kidney Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, National Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society, and California Art Education Association.

Don't Let Ducks Quack Up Your Pool Plans

The return of  spring is just around the corner and with it comes the return of the ducks that have migrated south for the winter. Birders look forward to feeding our fine feathered friends and providing them environments to lay their eggs and hatch their ducklings. However, health experts say, "Keep ducks out of your pools and the area around them. And don't feed them."

Pool and Spa Drain Covers Set To Complete Their Lifespans

Are your pool and spa drain covers still doing their jobs, and how would you know if they weren't? The answer may mean the difference between life and death.

Many suction pool and spa drain covers that were replaced or modified to comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act are now in need of replacement. Depending on their installation date and whether or not the drain covers were modified or completely replaced, your covers' life span could be over. Faulty drain covers are the cause of numerous entrapment drownings every year.
