"Somehow, not only for Christmas but all the long year through,

the joy that you give to others is the joy that comes back to you."

This edition of "Cardinal Chronicles" focuses on giving.

As we approach the "season of giving," I'd like to tell you how proud I am of Cardinal Property Management's philosophy of philanthropy. Our CEO Susan Naples established Cardinal's foundation of giving when she started the company over 30 years ago, and we stand firmly

on that platform today.

First, we give all year round not just during holidays. People in need are not in need based on the end-of-year calendar. But that's when many of us pay attention. Keeping those in need in mind all year long, Cardinal donates time, money, and supplies throughout the year.

Second, we often give anonymously. Cardinal does not always know the recipients of our efforts nor do we need to. For example, in our adopt-a-family program, we often shop for "boy, age 13" or "mother who would like a sweater, if possible." And we do not write anything in the "from" portion of a gift tag. Sometimes, true selflessness comes in the wrap of anonymity.

Third, no cause or contribution is too small for our attention. Whether it's $200 per month from our Casual Friday fund or a charity that one staff member believes in, Cardinal gives because we can.

So why am I publicly touting our charitable work? Because I want to encourage you to either give on your own or join us in our efforts. While I'm aware that the country is enduring economic hardship the likes we haven't seen since the Great Depression, I'm also aware that if you're reading this you have a home, electricity, and a computer-and that's way ahead of some of our recipients.

Below is a small sample of Cardinal's efforts to ease the way for others. We hope you'll join us.

Partners

Throughout the year, we partner with our service providers to help where we can make a difference. The wonderful relationships with our vendors present Cardinal additional opportunities to give in the communities where we work and live.

Recently, we joined Antis Roofing & Waterproofing and donated school supplies for its Habitat for Humanity project in Mongolia.

For Thanksgiving, we have an annual tradition of working with 24-Hour Restoration to beef up the coffers of the Basket Brigade, which donates food to the hungry.

Christmas

SOSFor Christmas, we join Share Ourselves (SOS) in providing local families with gifts and food. Since 1970, SOS has been linking generous donors in the community with local families in need of assistance for the holidays. This wonderful holiday tradition embraces many struggling Orange County families by providing gifts and food for the holidays. This year, the Adopt-A-Family program will connect donors with more than 1,200 families with children recommended by Costa Mesa and Santa Ana Schools. We hope you will consider joining Cardinal in supporting this program and making it a part of your holiday tradition!

Casual Fridays

In order to dress casually on Fridays, Cardinal team members donates $5 per month to a "pot." Cardinal matches the monthly total and donates that money to charities. Participating staff members names are entered into a raffle drawing at monthly staff meetings and the team member whose name is called get to choose the charity. Recipients over the years include Heifer International, the American Cancer Society, Light the Night and hundreds of others.
