This series is written by Paula Ford-Martin, MA and covers useful tips and helpful ways to manage diabetes.

You can find

Learn what's new at DOD. Let's start with:

Latin Fusion Zumba with Rossy Leon
this Saturday
7/12/14, 1-3 p.m.!
(Download flyer & share with others HERE)

Let instructor Rossy Leon show you the moves to Latin Fusion Zumba - a dance fitness program that combines many styles of Latin dances such as merengue, salsa, and samba into a fun workout. Of course, Zumba is a blast and an easy way to burn calories without even realizing it.

Join us at the African American Art & Culture Complex located at 762 Fulton Street, San Francisco, CA 94102 (Muni access & free parking).

No need to register. Just show up! You get a $277 value health screening, and if you dance, collect $10 in carrot cash to spend at participating farmers' markets (for kids with diabetes and all adults who participate). The health screening is optional, but it is needed to get the carrot cash reward. We suggest a $10 donation at the door, if you can afford.

Please arrive promptly at 1 p.m. for check-in (or 1:15 p.m. if you are not doing the health screening). Bring water, a snack if you need it, and comfortable shoes. Have a question? Call Theresa at 1-877-765-4386 or email her at [email protected].

Drumroll please... 2013 Annual Report

We came together as a group to inspire health through dance, and the outcomes are impressive. If I had my act together, I would have done a video version of this... needless-to-say we are very excited about all that was accomplished last year.

DOD & Type 2 Dance Crew at ADA

Here are some photos of the DOD and Type 2 Dance Crew collaboration at the American Diabetes Association event where we showcased our outcomes from last year.

The Dance Out Diabetes crew was entertained by Fik-Shun, a lead dancer with the Type 2 Dance Crew. How can he do those moves? Check him out!

DOD Receives GuideStar Gold Star

GuideStar is a 501(c)(3) public charity that collects, organizes, and presents information on other nonprofits in an easy-to-understand format while remaining neutral.

Dance Out Diabetes has earned GuideStar's Gold

participation level attributed to DOD's commitment to data transparency in goals, strategies, capabilities, indicators, and progress. This level means that DOD keeps all impact information up to date and accurate.

Can You Bring Water & Snacks to Share?

It is important to stay hydrated while having fun on the dance floor. Dance Out Diabetes is looking for volunteers to donate and bring water bottles and healthy snacks for participants at the dance. If you can bring to share, great! Otherwise, the water fountain is 3 floors down, so please bring water for yourself. Thanks!

Theresa's Message

It's always a hectic time with the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions running simultaneous to Dance Out Diabetes programs! Great to see colleagues and friends. We presented our outcomes from 2013. And that's my excuse for the delay in getting our Annual Report together! Do check it out.

We have accomplished a lot last year and continue to do much this year. We finally are on GuideStar, the premier non-profit organization that shows inquiring minds about the value of a non-profit.

Interesting how our goal to reach as many people with and at risk for diabetes may be shooting us in the foot financially. We do not fit into a neat box of one type of diabetes or another and many funders have a preference for only serving certain sub-populations within diabetes. No one is doing what we are doing! We have a great thing going with all types of people with diabetes AND their circle of support.

So with that, I look forward to yet another gathering, enjoying Rossy Leon's return in leading us to a Zumba Gold Latin Fusion dance.

We are dancing for the health of it. And we've been more than noticed.

Warmly,
