Staying Healthy to Prevent Diabetes Complications

This monthly series discusses lifestyle choices that help you maximize your health with diabetes.

The series is written by Barbara Quinn, MS, RD, CDE, and you can find
Happy 3rd Birthday, DOD!
Virtual cake has no carbs or fat...

Greetings!

Three years ago on November 14, 2010,
Dance Out Diabetes came together to celebrate World Diabetes Day with our very first dance!

We've come a long way since then, and
we've grown up a lot this year. We've reached the most amount of people with our onsite dances, and we've touched even more virtually, through our live streaming videos. We are going far together...

Help DOD Raise $15,000 for Next City!

In 2014, we have plans to start another location for our programs. This will be in addition to the S.F. location. Will it be the East Coast? Midwest? South?

You can donate here to help make this goal a reality. The person who donates or raises the most money gets to chose the finalist city. And of course, every bit goes to our programs and helps to prevent and manage diabetes via our community-based dance program.

Funk vs. Techno with DJ T-Bone
this Saturday 11/9/13, 1-3 p.m.
(Download flyer & share with others HERE)

Join DJ T-Bone, DJ Charis's  apprentice, in an afternoon of  freestyle dancing to Funk and  Techno music! Funk is a music  genre that originated in  the 1960s when African  American musicians
 blended
soul music, jazz and  R&B into a rhythmic,  danceable new form of music.
 Techno is a form of
electronic dance music with repetitive instrumentals that emerged in Detroit, Michigan during the 1980s. Have a funky techno time dancing for the health of it!

Join us at the African American Art & Culture Complex located at 762 Fulton Street, San Francisco (Muni access & free parking). Please arrive promptly at 1 p.m. for check-in (or 1:15 if you are not doing the health screening). Bring water, a snack if you need it, and comfortable shoes.

And if you can't make it to the AAACC,  tune in by clicking here at 1:30 p.m. to dance along with us LIVE!

Cost: suggested $10 donation if you can afford it.

Free screening for those who dance. Those who don't dance but want to be screened can do so with a $50 charge which is a great deal (check out comparison charges).

Come Dance & Get PAID in Carrot Cash!

You can earn up to $20 in Carrot Cash by participating in the Funk vs. Techno dance and health screening event this Saturday! That's right. You do your part by dancing and getting screened, and you get rewarded with bucks to spend at participating farmer's markets.

Computer Programmer Needed

Do you have the inside track on patient portal building or do you know someone who does? If you do,
please contact Theresa at 1-877-765-4386 or via email at tgarnero@danceoutdaibetes.org. Let's talk turkey before Thanksgiving.

New Start Time for December ONLY.
The 12/14/13 ABBA-Licious Beginning Hustle with Emily Coles is at 3:00 p.m.

Next month's dance will begin at 3:00 p.m. If you do not want to get the health screening, come at 3:15 for the dance.

2014's dance schedule will return to the usual time beginning at 1:00 p.m. every second Saturday of the month. Stay tuned for our line up of dances!

A big "thank you" goes out to the African American Art & Culture Complex for their ongoing partnership and fine dance studio space!

This Month's Featured Sponsor is...

Paragon Real Estate Group has been with DOD since the beginning as they were our very first corporate sponsor. They continue to support our efforts with a recent donation of a $2,000 unrestricted grant! Thank you, Paragon Real Estate!

Gratitudes
We're heading into the holidays - already. And World Diabetes Day is right around the corner on 11/14. It is a perfect time to show gratitude right in our backyard to our DOD family and all that believe in what we are doing and accomplishing.

Special note of thanks for our volunteers who make this all possible. Many were honored at a volunteer appreciation meal last month. Without you, the DOD model would not work.

We are an efficient non-profit with no part or full time staff. Please do consider making a tax-deductible contribution to Dance Out Diabetes. No, we are not going to find a cure, but yes, we ARE helping to prevent and manage it while bringing together our community, starting with the circle of support for those with or at-risk for diabetes. That's right. We don't discriminate based on type of diabetes and everyone is welcome.

We are preparing to launch into another city in 2014 and need the assistance of our network to make it possible. We can do this! Will you become part of our vision and help extend our joy into other communities? Yes! I know you can.

DOD is unique. Perhaps the fitness personality profile of those who dance nicely describes what we are about: social, spontaneous, externally motivated and focused.

Life is short, and if you're lucky, sweet. May you enjoy the company of family and dear friends over Thanksgiving. Let's start with a large serving of old "skool" funk this Saturday. Oh yeah!
