Staying Healthy to Prevent Diabetes Complications

Although type 2 diabetes cannot be cured, many of the scary complications that accompany this disease can be prevented.

Each month, the new series, Staying Healthy to Prevent Diabetes Complications, discusses

"lifestyle choices" that pack a powerful punch against the dangers of diabetes.

The series is written by Barbara Quinn, MS, RD, CDE, and you can find

Do you want delicious, healthy produce and to

Carrot Cash support your local farmers' market? DOD has partnered with The Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association (PCFMA) to offer gift cards called "Carrot Cash" for use at PCFMA locations

The PCFMA is a not-for-profit organization that operates and promotes farmers' markets in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is driven by its mission to serve California's small farmers by creating and sustaining economic opportunities through these farmers' markets.

Come to Dance Out Diabetes' Brazilian Samba class this Saturday for a chance to win Carrot Cash! Here's how:

1. Attend the Dance Out Diabetes dance event this Saturday, & get your full health screenings.

2. Tell us how you exercised for 30 minutes 3 times every week between dances.

3. Return a 3-day Weigh Wise Food/Activity Diary, & get our diabetes educator feedback.

Shape Up San Francisco DOD Team

It's not too late to join the Dance Out Diabetes virtual walking challenge team!

Shape Up San Francisco provides a 10-week Walking Challenge from April 1-June 7. Teams are forming all over San Francisco and walking together to meet the goal of the Challenge, which is to virtually walk the entire coast of California (1,016 miles).

Dance Out Diabetes has created a team and wants YOU to join us! Keep track of walking or any other physical activity you do (20 minutes of physical activity = 1 mile), and log it on the Shape Up San Francisco website.
We'll give $25 to four people that log the most miles at the program's end on June 7th.

Greetings from Your Volunteer E.D.

Volunteer week is right around the corner and I'd like to thank each and every one of our volunteers for making DOD possible. We are a successful, unique organization with impressive outcomes because of you!

We are discovering the effectiveness of our incentives with record attendance. It is for that reason we will give priority screening for those who dance. If you do not plan on dancing and wish to have health screenings performed, we will charge $50 (still one heck of a deal, considering most hospitals charge well over $100 for an A1C, let alone all the other check-ups we perform and consultation with certified diabetes educators).

This month, you will notice that our rewards encourage you to eat healthy. You can up to $30 worth of "Carrot Cash" to spend at local farmers' markets.

Mainly, our collective mind is about moving our bodies, so let's have some fun, Samba-style!
