Staying Healthy to Prevent Diabetes Complications

Although type 2 diabetes cannot be cured, many of the scary complications that accompany this disease can be prevented.

Each month, the new series, Staying Healthy to Prevent Diabetes Complications, discusses

"lifestyle choices" that pack a powerful punch against the dangers of diabetes.

The series is written by Barbara Quinn, MS, RD, CDE, and you can find

Shape Up San Francisco DOD Team

Shape Up San Francisco provides a 10-week Walking Challenge from April 1-June 7. Teams are forming all over San Francisco and walking together to meet the goal of the Challenge, which is to virtually walk the entire coast of California (1,016 miles).

Dance Out Diabetes has created a team and wants YOU to join us! Keep track of walking or any other physical activity you do (20 minutes of physical activity = 1 mile), and log it on the Shape Up San Francisco website. (Register below.)

When you register, you will be asked to create a username and password so that you can log in and set a personal goal. After you've exercised, you can record your miles on the site. Your progress will be tracked on your own personal page and you will also be able to see how the team, and other teams, are doing. By being part of the DOD team, you will not only be building great habits to stay healthy, but you will also be rewarded with city discounts and a celebration event for all your hard work.

Featured Sponsor: Glooko

We depend on our sponsors and donors to keep our services free. This month's featured sponsor is Glooko.

With Glooko, you can say goodbye to paper logbooks and manually entering your blood glucose values into a diabetes app. The Glooko MeterSync Cable downloads the data from 17 compatible blood glucose meters to the Glooko Logbook app on your iPhone for effortless logging.

Glooko will demo the product at Saturday's dance. If you come to DOD with the Glooko Logbook app downloaded to your iPhone or iPod touch, we will give you a FREE Glooko MeterSync Cable ($40 value)!

Will you join our vision?
DOD has a clear vision to be THE most innovative and FUN way to prevent and manage diabetes.

We need to reach many more people besides the hundreds that come to our SF dances. Part of the plan is to branch out to other locations this year. Being a volunteer-based non-profit where most of the leadership have other full-time jobs in the field of diabetes, we are looking to grow our Board of Directors. If this is of interest to you, please reach out to me so we can have a conversation. Of course, you can also be a volunteer or a donor to bring us to the next level.

A big thanks to the AAACC for the dance studio space we call our home.
