SCOTT JSA SHINES IN WASHINGTON D.C.
Over President's Day Weekend, 12 students from the Scott High School JSA represented the Scott High School community at the JSA Winter Congress in Washington D.C., a student-run simulation where students participate in the legislative process by taking on the roles of members of Congress.
Two of the four pieces of legislation submitted by Scott High School students were among the 67 bills included on the docket for debate. Special congratulations go out to Representative Lindsay Allen and Senator Matt Adams whose bill (A BILL TO MODIFY CURRENT REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON FOOD LABELS) passed both the House and Senate, and was signed into law. Also, an honorable mention goes out to Representative Sarah Hammons whose bill (A BILL TO EXTEND THE DEATH PENALTY TO SEX OFFENDERS) passed in the House committee.
Besides expressing their opinions through debating and voting on legislation, Scott High School students also participated in a moonlight tour of Washington D.C. to include visits the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, as well as the WWII, Korean, and Vietnam Memorials. Most importantly, these 12 students represented Scott High School on a national stage with dignity and class.

DUAL CREDIT CLASSES -TRANSPORTATION from Scott!
Many of the students at Scott High School continue to take advantage of the opportunity to take college classes while in high school. These "dual credit classes" result in students getting credit for the class on their school transcript as well as their college transcript.
Transportation from Scott to NKU and Gateway
Students in collaboration with Kenton County central office have arranged for coordinating busing back and forth from Scott High School to NKU and Gateway for 2016-2017 school year. YES -BUSING! We will be working with students this spring to best schedule classes at specific times to facilitate these opportunities for our students.  Pretty exciting! Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.
Dual Credit Classes at Scott
With an increased interest and participation in so many dual credit classes we have also increased the on campus opportunities for our students in 2016-2017.  The following dual credit options are available to Scott High School Students taught by Scott High School teachers who are adjunct professors at local colleges:
  • English 101
  • History 102, 103
  • German 101, 102, 201, 202
  • College Algebra
Additionally, there will be several dual credit classes based at Scott High School taught by college professors from the university.
BECOME CCR

Become College and Career Ready (CCR)

Often you may hear a student or an adult ask the question "Are you CCR?", but what do they mean?  CCR is short for College and Career Ready.  This term is actually referring to two different categories: College Ready and Career Ready.
  • A student is considered College Ready when they demonstrate the minimum required level of performance on an approved assessment such as ACT, KYOTE, or Compass.  Achieving College Ready status implies a student is ready for education at the next level and will likely not be required to take remedial classes as a college student.
  • In order for a student to be considered Career Ready they must first achieve a College Ready Status, complete an approved Career Pathway, and pass an approved industry level assessment such as KOSSA.  Achieving Career Ready status may allow a student early acceptance into specific college programs as well as increase the chances of employment.
For more information related to CCR please follow the links below:

College and Career Ready:Lift Off! (12th Grade)
Part 1
By Deborah Ison

This is it. The SENIOR year! We know that students feel that they have made it and we are proud of them, as well. However, there are still the months between August and May that students will have to get through. Finish the race. College is on the doorstep. Much of the information that follows is simply college-going etiquette.  It is how things are done.
College-going 12th graders need to:
  • Complete the FAFSA in January. You can access it on line (https://fafsa.ed.gov ).  Don't be tricked by FAFSA.com or you will end up paying for something the government provides for free. You must have a FAFSA even for scholarships.
  • Do we need to say, "Keep your grades up" yet again?
  • Work on your college essays. Not all colleges require an essay, but if they do, you need to be prepared.
  • Know what "Early Decision" means and decide if it is for you. If you go Early Decision, watch your deadlines! Most are in December.
  • You should have all of your college applications completed by January 1.
  • When you ask for a Letter of Recommendation, make sure the person writing it can access a well-done ILP they can reference.  (You can invite others to view your ILP. Saves time having to create a "brag sheet.")
  • Give a person at least 7 days to complete a Letter of Recommendation. And, PLEASE, take the time to write a thank-you note to anyone who writes a letter for you.
  • If you are "wait-listed, "it is not a rejection. Keep your options open. You should know by May whether you are accepted.
  • Evaluate your financial aid packages from each school. I advise students to save as much as possible on undergrad school. Many of you will go to graduate school. Graduate school is the time to go BIG!
  • Notify all of your colleges by May 1 about your decisions: yes or no. They will appreciate it.
  • Work a summer job and save your money.
  • Enjoy the next exciting phase of your life. College is way better than high school!
